In a unique competition in Baotou, Mongolia, a man won a ‘lying flat’ contest by remaining still on a mattress for an incredible 33 hours.
You might think of sports like running or football as competitions, but did you know people compete in just about everything these days?
It seems like just about anything can become a competition! People have turned everyday tasks into organized events – from speed bed-making and elaborate table decorating to even digging graves as a team.
A unique competition recently held in Baotou, Inner Mongolia, China, has captured attention online: a ‘lying flat’ contest, where participants literally just lie down and relax.

China stunned by contest where winner lies down the longest
The competition was hosted by Sleemon, a Chinese company that sells mattresses and home furnishings. This was actually their third such event, held in a shopping mall in Baotou City, likely to advertise their products.
On November 15th, 240 people from around the region took part in a unique contest: seeing who could stay lying down on a Sleemon mattress for the longest time. It wasn’t a strict competition – participants could move around, use their phones, read, and even have food delivered while they tried to win.
Competitors would be disqualified if they stood up or stepped off their mattresses, even to use the restroom. Ordering food proved tricky because of this rule, though some participants reportedly wore diapers to avoid breaking it, according to local news.

The contest didn’t have a set end date. Organizers explained that the ‘lying flat’ competition would go on until they could identify the three people who slept the longest.
In a competition with 240 participants, one man impressively stayed lying down for 33 hours and 35 minutes. His effort on November 16th earned him a prize of 3,000 yuan (about $422 USD).
The second and third place winners earned 2,000 and 1,000 yuan, respectively ($281 and $140 USD).
The news quickly spread across Chinese social media, and many people joked that they could have slept much longer.
People jokingly celebrated the end of the year online, with one person saying they could ‘lie down until the New Year’ and another claiming they could ‘win by lying down!’
The contest was a huge success for Sleemon! It became so popular that they’re now thinking about holding it in other areas. The event was even live-streamed and got over 10 million views, turning what started as a small marketing idea into a major win for the brand.
Viral videos from China aren’t uncommon. Just recently, a man in central China completed a 70-day survival challenge in the wilderness, living off of whatever he could find – including rats, insects, and edible plants.
