Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil Set Photos Tease A Blood-Soaked & Destroyed Raccoon City

Zach Cregger, the director known for his work on Weapons, is officially rebooting Resident Evil, and photos from the set have surfaced.

Recently released photos from the set of the upcoming survival horror film reveal a devastated city, likely Prague, hinting at a catastrophic event. These images also provide some insight into when and where the movie takes place. They confirm the film is set in Raccoon City, the zombie-infested town from the original Resident Evil video games (via V Arno/X and The Prague Reporter).

So far, there have been seven Resident Evil films. The first six starred Milla Jovovich, and a separate, unsuccessful attempt to restart the series came out in 2021.

The new images from director Zach Cregger’s Barbarian don’t feature any actors. Instead, they showcase Prague streets that have been carefully made to look like disaster zones, complete with destroyed and burned-out cars. Snow covers the streets and vehicles, hinting that the movie takes place in winter.

Some photos reveal blood staining the snow and slush on the streets, suggesting a terrible event has occurred.

A photo reveals a snow-covered Martin County Sheriff’s SUV with Colorado license plates. While the original Resident Evil games don’t specify where Raccoon City is located, it seems the new movie will be set in a real place. Reports from the film set in Prague have noted other vehicles with Colorado plates, suggesting that’s where the story takes place.

Okay, so I’ve been checking out the new set photos, and there’s this really cool bus stop. It’s fully enclosed with glass, and inside they’ve got a map of Raccoon City – looks super detailed! They’ve also included a subway chart and, get this, an actual subway schedule. It’s little details like that which are getting me hyped for this movie!

According to The Prague Reporter, several streets in the city were closed for filming, including a shoot that took place at night. Residents were informed about the activity with a notice, and assured that any imposed curfews would be followed.

For the film shoot, Jirsíkova and Malého Streets will be made to look snowy, and all parked cars will be temporarily removed. The filming includes action scenes with gunfire and fast-paced driving. We realize this might be disruptive, so these scenes will be filmed respectfully and during reasonable hours to minimize noise.

The report also mentioned filming of dangerous car stunts and noted that a popular local restaurant was temporarily rebranded as the Oak Street Diner.

In a September interview, the director hinted that the upcoming Resident Evil movie will please fans of the games, but won’t strictly follow the game’s storylines (according to EW).

As a film buff, I can tell you this is a completely fresh story, and it really feels like something Zach Snyder would create. The interesting thing is, it’s set within the ‘Resident Evil’ universe, but I honestly don’t think game fans will be disappointed – it feels like a natural fit.

Director Cregger, discussing the influences on his new Resident Evil film, said he hadn’t watched any of the previous movies (according to Double Toasted). However, he’s a longtime fan of the games and believes his movie feels most similar to the worlds of Resident Evil 2 and 3, while capturing the atmosphere of Resident Evil 4.

The upcoming Resident Evil movie will star Austin Abrams (known for Weapons), Paul Walter Hauser (Cobra Kai), Zach Cherry (Severance), Kali Reis (True Detective), and Johnno Wilson (I Love That For You).

Cregger’s Resident Evil reboot is set for release on September 18, 2026.
