As the year winds down, people are either planning for new TV shows in 2026 or enjoying their favorite home improvement programs on HGTV. The network usually delivers great content, so viewers were surprised to recently find the movie Elf unexpectedly airing on the channel.
Everyone loves the Christmas movie Elf, but it recently caused a bit of a stir when it unexpectedly showed up on the Home & Garden Television channel. Viewers weren’t pleased and quickly shared their complaints on social media.
HGTV Viewers Sound Off After Elf Was On Network
Shortly after the show aired, people on the HGTV subreddit started a discussion criticizing the network’s choice to show Elf. There was widespread disapproval, and many different reasons were given, including those listed below:
- I love Elf, but I’d be highly pissed if I noticed it was on HGTV. But this is why I don’t mess with cable anymore. -nerdkween
- We don’t tune into HGTV to watch Elf‼️Sounds like HGTV management needs to bring back some of the cancelled programs that actually highlighted home building, remodeling, landscaping and interior design. -Ambitious_Tell_4852
- They have more than enough content from over the years. These movies should not be on HGTV. What’s going on with this channel? -Sally4464
- It’s like it’s a glitch or something. Makes zero sense. The movie last week, & Elf this week, traditionally will play almost non-stop on other channels for the next 6 weeks or so. NO reason I can think of for xmas movies on HGTV. -ritcottarose
- Huh? That just doesn’t make sense. How is Home and Garden TV related to a silly Christmas movie about a giant elf? Huh? -OddRevolution7888
Some people guessed that HGTV aired the movie Elf because Zooey Deschanel, who stars in it, is engaged to Jonathan Scott from The Property Brothers. They joked that the network might be giving the couple a little financial boost for their wedding through the movie’s broadcast fees.
If that was the goal, the network didn’t mention it when asked about the movie by EW. They stated that the decision to air the movie, and others like it, was based on what viewers wanted.
HGTV is constantly seeking fresh content, and our viewers really enjoy when we include well-known films in our programming.
It’s not connected to Zooey Deschanel, which is disappointing because they could have shown Batman Returns afterward, tying into her Halloween costume. Instead, the movies appearing on HGTV’s 2025 schedule seem to be a conscious choice, and some viewers actually enjoy it.
More Movies Are Headed To HGTV Over The Next Month
I have some good news for anyone who enjoys a movie night on HGTV! It seems they aren’t stopping the films anytime soon, which I’m thrilled about. They’ve got a great lineup planned, including classics like A Christmas Story and The Intern, plus newer options like Candy Cane Lane and both The Father of the Bride movies. Okay, so they’re not exactly home improvement focused, but it’s still fun to see houses on screen, right?
Fans of The Bachelor and HGTV are in for a treat! A new competition show is coming, featuring beloved former contestants. But it does make you wonder… what exactly will this show be about?
Beyond HGTV’s commitment to more diverse shows, the network significantly reduced its programming this year. These new movies could be a solution to fill the gaps, as Warner Bros. Discovery, which owns HGTV, has a large library of content it can use.
It looks like putting movies on HGTV isn’t resonating with viewers. People watch HGTV for home improvement content – renovations, shopping for homes, or demolition – and movies just don’t fit that expectation. It feels a bit like when MTV stopped playing music videos, though HGTV isn’t quite at that point yet. Luckily, there are still plenty of great home improvement shows available, and hopefully, that will continue to be true.
You can watch HGTV through your cable provider or on various streaming services. While it’s not currently a good option for watching movies, that might change by 2026 if the network needs to cut back on its regular programming.
