Fans already know who will take over as Iron Man after Robert Downey Jr., and that actor is reprising the role in a new Avengers movie. Downey Jr. is synonymous with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having originated the role of Tony Stark in the first Marvel film, Iron Man (2008), and playing him until the character’s death.
Robert Downey Jr. will be back in a future Marvel Cinematic Universe film, but this time playing Doctor Doom instead of Iron Man. The fate of Tony Stark remains uncertain, though alternate versions of characters from across the multiverse could appear in Avengers: Doomsday. Regardless of whether Downey Jr. reprises his role as Iron Man, Marvel has already found someone else to play him in a new MCU show, and a recently announced Avengers project proves they made the right decision.
Robert Downey Jr. Was Recast As Iron Man In A Marvel Studios Series
Currently, no actor has been officially chosen to play Iron Man, or any alternate versions of him, in future live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe films. While rumors about Tom Cruise potentially taking on the role have circulated, nothing has been confirmed for the upcoming Avengers movies. It’s worth noting that Robert Downey Jr. didn’t reprise his voice role as Iron Man for the animated ‘What If…?’ series on Disney+.
The animated series boasts a fantastic voice cast, including returning Marvel Cinematic Universe stars like Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Hayley Atwell as Captain Carter. While Robert Downey Jr. didn’t reprise his role as Iron Man, Marvel Studios brought in Mick Wingert to voice different versions of Tony Stark across the three seasons of the show.

Following his performance as Iron Man in What If…?, where he took over the role of Tony Stark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe from Robert Downey Jr., Wingert is now reprising the character in Marvel’s new Avengers animated series. The series is currently streaming on Disney+, and is divided into two parts titled LEGO Avengers: Strange Tails. Casting Wingert as the voice of Iron Man for this Avengers show was an excellent decision.
In the What If…? series, the actor provided various interpretations of Iron Man. Throughout it all, he consistently and impressively captured Robert Downey Jr.’s performance as Tony Stark. He doesn’t just mimic the sound of Iron Man, but also embodies the character’s wit and charm, creating a compelling and entertaining portrayal in every appearance.
I was thrilled to hear that Dave Wittenberg (Wingert) is reprising his role as Iron Man in LEGO Avengers: Strange Tails. Even though this animated show isn’t officially connected to the main Marvel Cinematic Universe like What If…?, hearing him voice Tony Stark feels like getting a version of Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man in a simpler Avengers story. This really adds to the excitement surrounding the release of Avengers.
