Southern Charm Season-Premiere Recap: Showered Without Affection

Many reality shows, like those on Netflix and Bravo, now start with a dramatic moment to immediately grab your attention. This episode does that by showing a major fight between Austen and Craig, hinting at the season’s conflict over Craig’s past struggles. It’s a technique that worked well for shows like The Real Housewives of New Jersey, which famously began with Teresa Giudice flipping a table. However, this approach feels less effective on Bravo lately, especially since fans who follow celebrity news often already know what to expect. Still, this episode effectively lays out all the storylines that will unfold over the next fifteen episodes and the reunion specials, promising a compelling season. The question is, was the quick glimpse into the future really necessary?

Before the current season jumped ahead in time, it flashed back to earlier events, focusing on the many changes in Craig Conover’s life – and his remarkably good hair. Paige DeSorbo continues to be a central figure in the storyline, even though she’s left Southern Charm, Bravo, and reality TV. Madison, visibly pregnant, visits Craig to discuss his feelings after the breakup. He tells her he felt deeply betrayed by someone he trusted completely, and that they had made plans for the future together. To emphasize this betrayal, the show’s editors compiled footage of Paige expressing her suspicions about Craig, including his attempts to dissuade her from ending their relationship before she saw the ring he’d purchased – a ring she ultimately doubted even existed.

Craig then explains his past relationship, revealing he started dating someone new after his breakup because he felt lonely and wanted companionship. He admits he eventually realized he still needed to work on himself, so he ended things with her. Now, he’s single and enjoying time with his friends, particularly while they’re out looking for romantic connections in Los Angeles.

Austen and Shep were discussing a new acquaintance, Craig, while shopping for a gift for Madison. Shep balked at the idea of spending $100 on a rocking horse or $350 on a large teddy bear for Madison’s daughter, Teddy – named after her father and also a beloved podcast host who overcame cancer. Ultimately, he bought her a book, specifically a copy of There Are Mothers Worse Than You. I find it amusing how these two consistently bicker with each other. Despite their close relationship – she even answers his calls with a casual “Hey girl!” – Shep continues to give her subtly insulting gifts instead of saving money for a necklace for his next girlfriend.

Austen shared with Shep that Craig recently offered him a drink while they were in Los Angeles, which struck Austen as odd. Craig had previously said he was trying to avoid hanging out with friends to resist drinking. During the cast trip, Craig confessed to Austen that he’s an addict—a revelation that wasn’t entirely surprising, considering he was sitting next to a half-finished bottle of champagne. Austen and Shep admit they missed the warning signs. Shep believes Craig relied heavily on Paige as his only close friend and that their breakup has left him vulnerable, comparing it to a pointed observation you might hear from Phaedra Parks.

Let’s quickly check in on Molly. Her new house looks cute on the outside, but inside it’s a complete mess! There’s stuff everywhere – her euphonium, an unused scooter, and a huge collection of shark teeth, which is ironic considering her past relationship didn’t work out. I felt like I was echoing Rodrigo when I saw it, because he immediately told her she needs to clean and get organized. She shares her home with three cats (one hilariously named Robert Downey Jr. Jr.), a dog, a snake, and a gecko. She admits she’s just created paths through the clutter to get around. Rodrigo jokingly said it looks like a hoarder’s place, and he’s not wrong. I love Molly, but she really needs to get things under control before she ends up on an intervention reality show.

At Madison’s baby shower, Molly really connected with Kory Keefer, a familiar face from Winter House and Summer House and a close friend of Craig’s. It’s a bit surprising, considering he was last seen dating Sam Feher, the talkative blonde from the Hamptons – I wonder what happened there? Regardless, Molly seems to be enjoying his playful, somewhat mischievous personality. They were definitely flirting, and she even invited him to her place to hold her snake, to which he playfully responded that he’d prefer she hold his. That was a clever comeback! But honestly, all I could think was, Molly, be careful! He’s not going to follow up with a date; he’ll probably need to call the environmental protection agency to deal with whatever mess he finds at your place.

At Madison’s baby shower, which Miss Pat put a lot of effort and money into, a drama unfolded between Craig and Venita. It all stemmed from things they said on podcasts and TV – specifically, Venita’s interview on The Viall Files and Craig’s responses on Watch What Happens Live. They hadn’t actually confronted each other directly. On the podcast, Venita sided with Paige after the breakup, accusing Craig of seeking attention and wishing he’d stopped rumors about Paige cheating when he knew they weren’t true. Craig then declared he didn’t want to be around Venita. Strangely, there’s footage of Venita and the other women from Southern Charm watching that same episode together – it’s odd that someone was filming their reactions to it.

Venita is avoiding Craig at the party because she’s worried he’ll get angry and cause a scene, especially since it’s Madison’s special day. The party itself was beautiful, and Madison looked stunning. Miss Patricia was clearly proud, and I couldn’t help but notice how attractive Madison’s husband, Brett, was – even though she’s pregnant! I’m allowed to appreciate a good-looking man, and he’s straight anyway. I suppose I’ll just have to focus on Rodrigo, who is equally handsome, especially since he and Brett showed up in the same shirt. Rodrigo also gave Madison a really sweet gift and even painted her a picture. Craig is thoughtful too; he spent a month learning quilting in Missouri to make Madison a quilt. Honestly, someone should give Craig his own show on Netflix where he can showcase his amazing domestic skills. It would definitely be better than some of the shows already out there, like With Love, Meghan.

Things are tense between Craig and Venita, but it’s made more complicated by Venita’s new friendship with Salley, who goes by Salley with an extra ‘E’ – for ‘Extra’! After a bad breakup with her ex, JT (who everyone agrees is better off gone, having moved to Bali), Salley was there for Venita, and they’ve become close. Salley is also interested in Craig and wants them to make amends. Craig and Venita have been avoiding each other, but Salley insists Venita needs to talk to him, speaking for ‘us’ – seemingly herself and the show’s producers. Venita understandably refuses, and Salley pushes the issue, but Venita isn’t ready. It’s unrealistic to expect Venita to suddenly approach Craig for a heart-to-heart, especially at a party – let alone in Whitney’s famously dramatic cabin! She needs to do this on her own terms.

I didn’t particularly like Salley before, but her actions now are really making me dislike her. Like Venita pointed out, Salley is supportive of her female friends unless a man is involved. Salley claims she isn’t violating any unspoken rules, and says she’ll support Venita if things escalate into an argument with Craig. But until then, she thinks it’s okay to flirt with him. That doesn’t make any sense to me. If she were to defend Venita during a fight, it would mean she believes Craig did something wrong. If he did something wrong, especially to her friend, why would she even consider dating him? It’s like he’s already shown his true colors. Instead, Salley just stands there, shocked and speechless. Venita tries to leave, heading for the gate at the end of the driveway, hoping to find peace and freedom beyond it. She can almost feel a sense of calm washing over her, but it never comes. She repeatedly shouts, “Open the gates!” but no one pays attention, and she feels trapped all over again.
