I never thought I’d say this, but Rizgod is actually playing a really smart game on Survivor 49. Could he be one of the players returning for Survivor 50? My guess is it will be him, Savannah, Sage, or maybe Jawan. The episode begins with Rizo and Savannah returning from a strange Tribal Council where not everyone voted, but they feel like they won. Back at camp, those who didn’t vote thought Sophie would be eliminated because she’s so good at challenges, and they believed Rizo’s hidden immunity idol would be revealed. But Rizo managed to convince everyone to vote out MC, arguing she had too many allies and was a strong player. By the end of the episode, he’d swayed another vote and still hadn’t lost control of his idol, even though everyone knows he has it.
Something Sophie said before the challenge really resonated with me. She was frustrated that everyone expected her to be eliminated, and it made her re-evaluate who she could trust. She pointed out that the people you initially connect with in college – like those on your freshman floor – aren’t always your true friends. And that’s so true! I’ve argued before that dividing people into three small groups of six is a recipe for disaster, and Sophie’s comment perfectly illustrates why. When you first get to college, you quickly bond with those closest to you simply to feel safe and fit in. But as you get to know more people, you naturally find those you truly connect with and start forming deeper friendships. In a small tribe of six, those strong connections are essential for getting ahead. However, when everyone does the same thing, you end up with situations like ‘Hina Strong,’ where players stick together not because they genuinely like each other, but because there aren’t enough other options. It’s the game’s structure, not real relationships, that keeps these initial groups together.
It’s good to see Sophie moving past the drama and taking charge of her own strategy. Right now, the game seems to be controlled by a few different power groups. Jawan and Sage are tightly aligned, bonded by their dislike of Shannon. Steven and Kristina, who previously played with Sophie, are still on the sidelines. Rizo, Savannah, and Soph appear to be the strongest players, possessing an idol, an extra vote, and a special advantage, respectively. Alex is deliberately staying neutral, playing all sides and waiting to see how things develop before committing to an alliance.
The latest challenge split the players into two teams of four, with Soph sidelined. Kristina’s team – including Sophie, Alex, and Savannah – surprisingly won. Kristina then generously offered her share of the reward, a fried chicken dinner, to Jawan, who was the only player left who hadn’t enjoyed a proper meal. Jawan initially refused, feeling he hadn’t earned it, but eventually accepted after encouragement from the others, saying with a smile, “I think I want to eat the chicken, Uncle Jeff.”
Seriously, let’s talk about this new trend of calling Jeff Probst “Uncle Jeff” or even “Uncle J.” I get that we’ve watched him on TV for 25 years and feel like he’s part of the family, but he’s not! He’s the one putting these contestants through grueling challenges, making them compete for survival, and essentially entertaining himself by watching them struggle. And let’s not forget he’s actively making the game more difficult – taking away food, stealing essential tools, and generally making it harder to survive. Yet people see him as some kind of lovable figure? That’s just crazy! I doubt he’d appreciate being called “unc” if he knew it implied he was old.
Heading into the immunity challenge, two main strategies were forming about who to eliminate. Kristina and Steven were pushing to vote out Rizo, believing he has a hidden immunity idol. Their plan was to split the votes between Rizo and Savannah, so if Rizo used the idol, Savannah would be the one sent home. Sage agreed, admitting she doesn’t like Savannah’s attitude but actually appreciates it. Meanwhile, Rizo was trying to convince Savannah, Soph, and others that Alex is a threat because he’s playing a neutral game. Jawan, however, thought Savannah was a bigger target and wanted to eliminate her instead.
The immunity challenge involved players balancing a heavy disc with their feet – if it dropped, they were eliminated. However, there was a twist: both the last man and last woman standing would win immunity. Rizo and Kristina were quickly out, and Jawan jokingly asked Steven, a rocket scientist, to distract everyone with facts about space. Steven began sharing them rapidly, reminiscent of another player on a previous season who enthusiastically recited Taylor Swift lyrics. This season is definitely living up to its reputation for having a lot of intelligent contestants. After ten minutes of space facts, Sage couldn’t hold on any longer, and Jeff commented that Sage couldn’t take it anymore – not the physical challenge, but the overwhelming display of knowledge. Jeff himself eventually had enough, politely asking Steven to stop sharing the facts.
Steven likely secured his immunity win by defeating Jawan. Meanwhile, Savannah won the immunity necklace again, beating Sophie in a head-to-head challenge. Everyone feared Sophie’s strength in competitions, but it’s Savannah, surprisingly, who keeps winning these physically demanding challenges. This dramatically changes who is likely to be eliminated. Steven and Kristina are trying to convince others to target Savannah instead of Sophie if Rizo uses his immunity idol, and that’s the strategy they’re presenting to the group.
Rizo is actively working against Alex, letting everyone know about his strategy. The main focus is on Sage and Jawan, as their votes are key for either side, particularly if Steven and Kristina can successfully change their voting plan. Jawan wants to eliminate Rizo and his hidden immunity idol, but Alex’s unpredictable behavior is making that difficult. While Soph is now a secondary target, Sage and Jawan are only interested in splitting the vote if it ultimately targets Savannah. Meanwhile, Sophie is also maneuvering, as Steven and Kristina believe she’s still on their side, but she’s actually trying to distance herself from her original allies and form new connections with players who have similar strategies.
Before the tribal council, I didn’t know who would be voted out. There were two likely candidates, and I understood the reasons and potential strategy behind it – which made this a fascinating edit to work on. We knew something was going to happen, but the exact outcome was still a surprise. When the votes were revealed, Rizo got his way again, and Alex was eliminated. As he left, Alex joked, “I guess this is what happens when you try to play both sides. Did you all talk about it?” It’s good he could acknowledge his strategy and understand why he was voted out.
I’m not sure why Rizo was so focused on eliminating that particular player when he could have targeted Kristina or Steven, who are clearly trying to get him out – Soph and Sophie told him they were. While that player might have been difficult to prove anything against, he wasn’t the real threat. He could even become an ally later if he was genuinely neutral. Now, Rizo still faces the same level of opposition, and everyone’s already committed to their voting groups. However, this actually puts him in a strong position. He has Savannah and Soph’s votes secured, leaving Steven and Kristina (and that other player) as the only ones outside the core group. They’ve realized Sophie can’t be trusted and that Jawan and Sage might not be as supportive as they thought. They’re isolated, and it looks like all the power is falling to someone I’m hesitant to admit is playing a masterful game.
