A Family Stone Sequel Is in the Works

Happy holidays! There’s exciting news for fans of the 2005 film The Family Stone: a sequel is in the works! Writer and director Thomas Bezucha is bringing the Stone family back to the screen, and this time, the story will take place after the death of Sybil Stone, the beloved matriarch played by Diane Keaton. Keaton sadly passed away in October, and Bezucha says he’s been deeply affected by her loss while working on the script. He had already been planning a sequel, but now wants to create a film that truly honors Keaton’s memory and does justice to the rest of the cast. The original film followed the Stone family as they navigated a Christmas with Sybil after she received a cancer diagnosis, and then reunited the following year to remember her.

While a script isn’t finalized, director Bezucha has already contacted the original cast about a possible sequel. He told CNN he wouldn’t consider a reunion without Janeane Garofalo, who played Jan. Early responses from the actors have been overwhelmingly positive. Potential returning stars include Craig T. Nelson, Rachel McAdams, Elizabeth Reaser, Dermot Mulroney, Luke Wilson, and Tyrone Giordano. Claire Danes and Sarah Jessica Parker, who played sisters and love interests in the first film, are also being considered. Brian J. White could also return. The original movie is currently streaming on Disney+, making it a great time to revisit it. (Note: The original article uses the word ‘stoned’ which is a double entendre referring to both being emotionally affected and under the influence of drugs.)
