Stephen King’s story, The Running Man, recently achieved a notable success at the box office – something not often seen with adaptations of his work. The new film, directed by Edgar Wright and starring Glen Powell, is based on the 1982 novel originally published under the name Richard Bachman. It opened alongside Now You See Me: Now You Don’t and earned $16.5 million domestically in its first three days, landing at No. 2.
According to data from The Numbers, The Running Man has earned $30.4 million worldwide after five days in cinemas. Of that, $19.4 million came from North American theaters, and $11 million from international audiences. Reaching $30 million globally is a significant achievement, one that only 21 other movies based on the works of Stephen King have accomplished.
With roughly 50 Stephen King adaptations released in cinemas, The Running Man is already among a select few. However, it needs to earn significantly more to justify its large $110 million production cost.
Big-budget films typically need to make more than double their production costs just to avoid losing money. For The Running Man, that break-even point could be around $275 million. While its final earnings are still uncertain, it’s unlikely to reach that amount.
Even though The Running Man didn’t perform exceptionally well in theaters, it still has opportunities to become profitable. The film will continue to generate revenue through streaming, on-demand viewing, television broadcasts, and sales of physical copies like DVDs and Blu-rays.
Even if its success isn’t judged by how much money it made compared to its cost, the 2025 film The Running Man is expected to become one of the most successful Stephen King movies ever. It’s very likely to be the highest-grossing Stephen King adaptation of 2025. This film is the fourth Stephen King story to hit theaters this year, following The Monkey, The Life of Chuck, and The Long Walk.
Although The Running Man has currently earned less worldwide than The Life of Chuck ($11.4 million), it’s quickly catching up to the other two films. The Monkey ($68.9 million worldwide) only made $16.5 million domestically in its first five days, while The Running Man earned $19.4 million in the same period. The Long Walk ($62.2 million worldwide) performed even lower, with a five-day domestic total of just $14.4 million.
If The Running Man continues to perform as it has been, it’s projected to make around $84 million in total. This would make it the eighth highest-grossing movie based on a Stephen King story, following films like Secret Window, the 2019 version of Pet Sematary, The Dark Tower, 1408, The Green Mile, It: Chapter 2, and the first It movie.
