Colleen Hoover’s novel, It Ends With Us, continues to generate buzz even years after its release. The recent movie adaptation, available on Netflix, has been particularly notable due to a lengthy legal dispute involving Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, who both worked on the film. Now, newly released text messages show how Hoover responded to the controversy.
The legal battle between Blake Lively and Wayfarer Studios continues, now involving a defamation lawsuit from Justin Baldoni. Recently, documents obtained by People revealed a lengthy text message Baldoni claims he received from Jason Hoover.
I feel really isolated right now. Things went downhill quickly, and I was put in a difficult position where I felt like I had to make a choice I didn’t want to. But all the arguing back and forth in the media from both sides is just frustrating and makes everyone involved in the movie look unprofessional. It feels like everyone is just trying to protect themselves, and it’s created a really messy situation.
She’s probably talking about all the news coverage surrounding the movie It Ends With Us. Although the film deals with serious issues like domestic violence and family trauma, the controversy about the movie has actually received more attention than the story itself.
The film adaptation of It Ends With Us received positive reviews, with many praising its impactful storyline. It quickly gained popularity on Netflix, and there was initial speculation about a possible sequel, though that now seems improbable. Later, Colleen Hoover publicly discussed her working relationship with director Justin Baldoni and his team, stating:
I understand you might assume I’ve made choices based on specific factors, but the distance I feel started well before I even met Blake.
Although Justin Baldoni’s lawsuit was dismissed, his lawyers are continuing to build his case. Newly released text messages prove this, and reveal the concluding lines of a message from Colleen Hoover to the actor and filmmaker, in which she appears to ask him to stay out of the current controversy, writing:
I’ve been hurt by your behavior on several occasions. I recognize you haven’t publicly criticized me, and I appreciate that. However, as people with influence, you understand the power you have. I simply ask that you stop using that power to cause harm to me or my family.
It’s still unclear how Baldoni’s lawyers’ statement will affect the current situation, but these supposed text messages give us a glimpse into the author’s feelings at the time.
Even before the public disagreement between its lead actors, the movie faced criticism for its marketing. Some people were upset with Blake Lively’s suggestion that viewers wear floral prints to the theater, feeling it didn’t match the film’s serious tone.
You can currently stream It Ends With Us on Netflix. As of today, Colleen Hoover hasn’t publicly commented on the reported text messages.
