The game titled Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is essentially a complete redesign of the PlayStation 1 version from 2000. Interestingly enough, this isn’t the first remake of this expansive console RPG – it was also revamped for the Nintendo 3DS in 2016. However, what sets Reimagined apart is that it appears to be a more extensive makeover, incorporating an appealing new visual style that resembles sculpted figurines, similar to the FMV cutscenes from the PS1 version. The top-down perspective remains unchanged from the original. Preliminary looks suggest that this fresh visual style harmonizes well with the iconic character and monster designs of the late Akira Toriyama.

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, as suggested in its trailer and official website, will introduce significant alterations to both the narrative and gameplay mechanics. Although specific details about the story adjustments aren’t yet available, Square Enix has hinted that the plot has been restructured for a smoother pace and improved accessibility, given that the PlayStation 1 and 3DS versions are known for their extensive playtime requirements, often exceeding 100 hours just to complete the main storyline.

On the play mechanics front, Reimagined preserves the turn-based combats from the original game, offering the choice to boost battle speed or activate auto-battling. Similar to the 3DS version, Reimagined allows players to spot monsters on the field, and you’ll defeat low-level creatures without initiating combat. The game introduces a revamped class system that enables party members to choose two classes simultaneously, and it includes improvements and updates across all job categories.

Apart from Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, another Dragon Quest remake is approaching – Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake. This game will debut on PS5, Xbox, Switch 2 (or just Switch if you prefer), and PC on October 30th. You can preorder it for $60 on all platforms right now. The revamped HD-2D version offers improved versions of the original Dragon Quest games from the 1980s with fresh graphics, updated gameplay mechanics, and additional content. This remake builds upon last year’s HD-2D remake for Dragon Quest 3, which was available on all consoles, and more recently received a Switch 2 Edition upgrade to boost performance on Nintendo’s latest handheld device. While we eagerly wait for news about Dragon Quest 12, these classic series remakes will undoubtedly entertain fans in the meantime.
