I was so shocked to hear that the giant dinosaur at the Kansas theme park got hit by lightning! It was a 60-ton animatronic, can you believe it? Apparently, it caught fire and there’s some really dramatic footage of the whole thing going up in flames. It’s just unbelievable!
On April 25th, a fire broke out at Field Station: Dinosaurs, damaging a large, three-story replica of a Sauroposeidon. The fire started around 8:30 pm, and officials believe it was caused by a lightning strike. Emergency services were quickly dispatched to the scene.
When Derby firefighters arrived at the scene, they found a large fire engulfing the 100-foot-long animatronic, which weighed almost 60 tons, according to the Derby Fire Department.
Lightning strike destroys record-breaking animatronic dinosaur
Firefighters successfully stopped the fire from spreading beyond where it started, protecting the rest of the park.
Firefighters successfully entered the building and stopped the fire from reaching other dinosaur exhibits, preventing a potentially catastrophic event, according to the department. They also added with a touch of humor that this was the first dinosaur fire Derby has seen in 65 million years.

Okay, so it turns out the dinosaur that got wrecked at the park was Sauroposeidon – apparently, it was the longest animatronic dino ever made! The park announced it on social media and said they’d be open from noon to 5pm so people could, uh, ‘pay respects.’ It’s kinda sad, honestly. I guess we’re all going to go look at the remains.
The park confirmed that visitors could still enjoy the exhibits that weren’t affected by the fire, with 39 dinosaurs remaining on display.
Steven Howe, who manages operations at the park, explained to KSN that restoring the dinosaur would be a significant project.
“We’re talking hundreds of thousands of dollars,” Howe said. “And that’s for a full replacement.”

He said bringing the animatronic back to life would involve talented artists carefully sculpting foam around a steel frame and updating all the wiring inside.
He explained that every detail – each wrinkle, bump, or knot – was intentionally sculpted by hand, making the work truly unique. He noted that very few artists still create pieces with that level of handcrafted detail today.
They’re thinking about fixing up the dinosaur, but in a really cool way. Instead of completely rebuilding it, they might just replace the head and leave the metal frame visible. It would be like seeing how the whole thing was originally constructed – a bit of a behind-the-scenes look, which I think would be awesome!
