The popular Western film has been performing well for several days and climbed one spot on November 14th, surpassing Liam Neeson’s The Naked Gun in viewership. While MGM+ currently has the top spot thanks to positive feedback, there are still many other excellent Westerns available.
The current Top 10 charts feature both classic and updated films. A standout is the 2016 remake of The Magnificent Seven, boasting a popular cast including Denzel Washington, Ethan Hawke, Chris Pratt, and Jason Momoa. Also appearing is the 2013 film Billy the Kid, starring Jerry Chesser and Kimberly Campbell.
This classic Western film featured a remarkable cast, with leading roles played by and . It also included strong performances from Sam Elliott, Bill Paxton, Powers Boothe, Michael Biehn, and Dana Delany, and was narrated by Robert Mitchum.
Kevin Jarre originally wrote and was set to direct Tombstone, but he struggled with the project and was replaced by George P. Cosmatos about a month before filming began. Cosmatos then took over as director.
Tombstone’s Resounding Success Still Echoes Today
Wyatt, Virgil, and Morgan Earp, three lawmen, arrive in Tombstone, Arizona, and start a new business after leaving their previous jobs. They reconnect with their old friend, Doc Holliday, and quickly become embroiled in a conflict with a group of outlaws known as The Cowboys.
Tombstone is an action-packed film with incredible acting and memorable dialogue, and it includes one of the most famous gunfights in cinematic history, between Johnny Ringo and Doc Holliday.
The Western was a critical and commercial success upon its release. It currently holds a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with 76% approval from critics based on 50 reviews, and a remarkable 93% audience score from over 100,000 viewers. Many fans consider it one of the greatest Westerns ever made. The film earned $73.2 million despite a $25 million budget, making it a major financial win.
Earlier this year, a 4K Steelbook edition of Tombstone was released, sadly shortly after the death of actor Val Kilmer. Allison Rose of Flick Direct praised the film, calling it a true classic Western and “an essential for any classic film collection.” Its recent return to the charts proves its enduring popularity, cementing its status not only as a great Western, but as one of the best films ever made.
