The popular spy thriller series on Prime Video is returning after a three-year hiatus, and this week’s new episodes have a surprising element. Prime Video already has a lot going on, as its hit show The Boys will finish its run on Wednesday, May 20th.
This is shaping up to be a record-breaking week for the streamer. While the finale of The Boys is a major draw, it’s not the only reason Prime Video is having such a successful week. Prime Video is known for its popular action shows, including Reacher, starring Alan Ritchson, which is expected to return in 2026.
Although Reacher has been a hit for Prime Video, it’s not the only action series featuring a well-known character to do well on the platform. Throughout Reacher‘s run, it’s been closely followed by another series—a spy thriller that many thought was finished. However, plans were secretly underway to bring it back, and it will return shortly with a fresh approach.
The popular series Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, starring John Krasinski, ran for four seasons and concluded in July 2023. Now, almost three years later, the story continues with a new movie. Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War, Krasinski’s first time playing the character on the big screen, will be available to stream on Prime Video this Wednesday, May 20th.
Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War Brings Back The Franchise To Where It Began
It was unexpected that Prime Video ended the Jack Ryan series only to potentially revive Krasinski’s portrayal of the character, along with familiar faces like Wendell Pierce and Michael Kelly. However, this makes sense for the franchise, as the original Prime Video series was a unique departure. Before that four-season thriller, Jack Ryan existed solely as a series of movies, and it remains the only TV adaptation of the story. Now, with Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War, the franchise is returning to its roots.
Ghost War is the newest installment in the Jack Ryan film series. Several actors have played the character created by Tom Clancy, including Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck, and Chris Pine. The first film, The Hunt for Red October starring Alec Baldwin, remains the most popular with both critics and audiences, earning an impressive 88% approval rating. The previous Jack Ryan movie, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, featured Chris Pine and received less positive reviews, with a 55% critic score and 52% audience score.
Why John Krasinski’s Jack Ryan Returning In A Movie Is Better Than Season 5
With over a decade since the last Jack Ryan film, Ghost War faces a big challenge. It needs to successfully adapt the TV series for the big screen and also redeem the previous film, which didn’t quite meet expectations. While it’s an unconventional choice, having John Krasinski reprise his role is a better path than continuing the Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan series on Prime Video. Although the show started strong, later seasons felt drawn out and included unnecessary scenes and storylines.
With the main series concluded, we now have a clear understanding of Jack Ryan’s character – his values, fears, and motivations. Instead of stretching the story further, the new installment, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War, offers a fresh, fast-paced adventure with increased action and a focused plot. The Jack Ryan franchise is poised to deliver its most exciting chapter yet when it returns this week.
