
After 28 years, the film The Bone Temple is the first new release to compete with Avatar: Fire and Ash. Fire and Ash is the third movie in James Cameron’s hugely successful Avatar series, with the first two films ranking as the highest- and third-highest-grossing movies ever made.
Nia DaCosta, who directed Candyman, helmed the new horror sequel 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. This is the fourth film in the 28 Days Later series and features Alfie Williams, Ralph Fiennes, Jack O’Connell, and Chi Lewis-Parry in the cast.
According to data from The Numbers, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple brought in $2.1 million from Thursday night showings in the US. This makes it the first film to surpass Avatar: Fire and Ash (which earned $1.48 million on Thursday) as the top-grossing movie for a single day.
The movie Fire and Ash stayed at the top of the charts for 27 days, starting on December 19th and lasting until January 15th. Now, The Bone Temple has ended its run, preventing it from reaching 28 days at No. 1.
