23 Years Later, the Most Notorious Zombie Movie Gets ‘Unofficial Sequel’

Director Uwe Boll is returning to a video game movie he made years ago that received a lot of negative criticism. Originally released in 2003, he’s now making a sequel after more than two decades.

According to reports, Uwe Boll has begun filming 23 Years Later – The Castle of the Dead, a zombie movie he describes as an unofficial sequel to House of the Dead. Jonathan Cherry and Ona Grauer, who starred in the original House of the Dead, are reprising their roles. It’s important to note that this new film isn’t officially connected to the House of the Dead video game franchise, as Boll doesn’t have the rights to use the game’s title.

23 Years Later Reunites Two House of the Dead Stars

Oliver Boll is directing 23 Years Later, which he wrote with Lutz Geiger. Michael Roesch is the producer, and Boris Wolffgardt is co-producing. Though the story hasn’t been revealed yet, Boll has said the film will be set in a castle. Roesch hinted that this new movie is expanding on the previous one, moving the action from a smaller location to a castle overrun with zombies.

A new movie adaptation of House of the Dead is in the works, this time directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, who is famous for the Resident Evil films with Milla Jovovich. Uwe Boll, the director of the original House of the Dead film, has criticized Anderson’s project and suggested it motivated him to create another zombie movie that will offer something different from the upcoming adaptation.

Upon hearing the news, Boll instantly predicted a visually-driven, but emotionally empty, special effects spectacle. He stated his desire to create a zombie film that was the opposite – raw, violent, and made with a practical, hands-on approach.

House of the Dead Was Infamously Panned

Boll’s House of the Dead is widely considered one of the worst zombie movies ever created. Critics and audiences heavily disliked it, giving it a mere 3% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with viewers scoring it only slightly higher at 11%. The film also barely made a profit, earning $13.8 million against a $12 million budget, and is consistently ranked among the worst video game-to-film adaptations.

Despite the criticism, Uwe Boll continued to direct many films, including Alone in the Dark, BloodRayne, In the Name of the King, Postal, and Far Cry. Several of these even spawned sequels. He’s now planning a reboot of Alone in the Dark after securing the rights from THQ Nordic through his company, Event Films. His next project, Citizen Vigilante, starring Armie Hammer, is scheduled for release this summer.
