Hollywood is facing some challenges. Movie tickets, concessions, and production costs are all very high, but these expenses haven’t translated into strong box office numbers. Recent reports indicate domestic box office revenue fell significantly short of expectations for 2025, considered a major disappointment. However, there’s one success story: IMAX. The company reports a record-breaking year with $1.28 billion in global box office revenue.
IMAX had a remarkably successful year, driven by popular international animated films like Ne Zha 2 and Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, as well as movies starring major actors such as Brad Pitt (F1), Tom Cruise (Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning), and Spider (Avatar: Fire & Ash). IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond anticipates even greater success in 2026, noting a strong upcoming film schedule and consistent gains in market share as filmmakers, studios, and audiences worldwide increasingly favor the IMAX experience.
Upcoming films to watch include Dune: Part Three, Greta Gerwig’s take on Narnia, a movie based on The Mandalorian and Grogu, and Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of The Odyssey. Nolan’s Odyssey will be particularly groundbreaking as the first feature film shot entirely with Imax cameras. Get ready, Imax fans – it’s going to be a costly year for moviegoers!
