Despite a long development process, Ubisoft continues to work on Beyond Good & Evil 2 and is currently expanding the team with new hires.
The announcement of Beyond Good & Evil’s return at UbiDays 2008 and the first look at the sequel at E3 2017 generated huge excitement. Subsequent events continued to build anticipation, suggesting that despite a long wait, Ubisoft was committed to bringing back this beloved, yet often overlooked, game.
It’s been several years, and Beyond Good & Evil 2 appears to be no closer to release than it was ten years ago – perhaps even further off. While there used to be rumors of secret development at Ubisoft, the last update was almost a year ago, and it wasn’t very promising. That update was also just based on the word of a former developer, so it wasn’t official confirmation of anything.
Beyond Good & Evil 2 is still alive
Despite previous reports, it seems development of Beyond Good & Evil 2 is still ongoing. Eurogamer recently noticed Ubisoft is hiring a technical sound designer to work on the game. Ubisoft is building the game using their Voyager engine, and it will feature the open world and space pirate gameplay originally showcased in presentations from over ten years ago.
The game can be enjoyed either by yourself or with others, and it looks like it will feature a cooperative mode for playing with friends.
While this isn’t a huge update, combined with the new content added to the original game’s anniversary edition, it hints that Ubisoft is still planning to release Beyond Good & Evil 2. However, two big questions still need answers: when will the game finally be released, and after 17 years of anticipation and a challenging development, will it live up to expectations for both longtime fans and new players?
