I’ve been a huge fan of strategy games for years, and it’s awesome to see how popular they’ve become! There are so many classics, and each one feels special. Like, I love building up my base in the Age of Empires games, but then something like Total War lets you jump right into the action. It’s great that the genre is so diverse, with each game bringing its own unique spin to things.
These games are top-tier and incredibly easy to pick up and play, offering both engaging campaigns and instant action. Thanks to simple controls, helpful tutorials, and accessible design, they’re a great way to rediscover – or fall in love with – strategy games.

I still think about Imperial Glory sometimes, and honestly, it’s aged incredibly well! It might not be super well-known, but for me, it’s one of the best real-time strategy games ever set in the colonial period. What really sets it apart is how realistic everything feels – the weapons, how units move, even the way the cannonballs fly. It creates a battlefield atmosphere that’s way more immersive than a lot of other games out there.
Plus, the game features a large campaign where you can play as several major European nations. While it doesn’t have quite the strategic depth of the Total War series, the exciting battles and tactical options more than compensate for that. Imperial Glory can be challenging to fully master, but it’s enjoyable and fairly simple to pick up the fundamentals.
9. Homeworld Remastered
A Strategy Game with a Focus on Story
Homeworld is a truly special sci-fi strategy game. It’s known for its compelling story – one of the best in the genre – and was remarkably beautiful when it was released. While the battles aren’t overly complex, they still require careful planning. Choosing the right ships and attacking at the right moment are key to winning fights and keeping your fleet intact.
Although the third game wasn’t as well-received, the original two Homeworld games are still enjoyable now. You can find both of them updated with improved graphics in the Homeworld Remastered Collection, making them look even better.
8. Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars
Fighters, Arm Up!
The Command & Conquer series has long been a major force in strategy games, but I think Tiberium Wars, released in 2007, remains the best. It’s easy to pick up and play, and you can master the basics in just a few hours.
This real-time strategy game offers something for every player with its three unique factions. While each faction progresses similarly, they all play very differently. The campaign is engaging and tells a compelling story, but the most exciting part is the large 8-player battles. It’s easy to see why newer games, like Tempest Rising, have drawn so much inspiration from it.
7. Empires of the Undergrowth
Conquer the Great, or Miniature, Outdoors
Empires of the Undergrowth is a fresh and unique real-time strategy game where you control ant colonies. Your goal is to help them survive and expand their territory by gathering resources, defending against threats like frogs, lizards, and dragonflies, and competing with other ant colonies.
To win, you’ll need to carefully explore both above and below ground, manage your resources, and build up your units. The game features a compelling story with a unique premise that’s both accessible and challenging, and ongoing downloadable content and multiplayer modes keep things interesting.
6. XCOM 2
A Turn-Based Sci-Fi Classic
If you’ve played the game, it’s no surprise so many similar games are being made. Its mix of turn-based fighting and luck-based rolls creates exciting and unpredictable battles, but skillful planning still plays a huge role.
Okay, so I’m totally hooked on XCOM 2! Basically, you’re fighting an alien occupation on a worldwide scale, and you do it with a team of soldiers you build up. You’ll be sent on tons of different missions to take back control of areas and slowly push back the aliens. But what really gets me is how attached you get to your soldiers. It’s seriously stressful because you really don’t want to lose anyone, and seeing them end up on that memorial wall? Ugh, it’s heartbreaking! The combat is super addictive, but it’s the personal connection to your squad that keeps me coming back for more.
5. Age of Empires 3
The Ultimate Laid Back Strategy and Settlement Sim
Age of Empires 3 is a fantastic strategy game for when you have a few hours to spare and want to dive into a detailed historical setting. You’ll build cities, gather resources, and create armies. While the military aspects aren’t overly complicated, the game has many elements that work together smoothly, making it easy to learn and enjoy.
Age of Empires 3 lets you choose to play as powerful nations from Europe, honorable Samurai clans from Japan, or fierce warrior tribes of South America, offering a diverse range of options. In my opinion, it’s the best game in the Age of Empires series. Plus, the campaign is a great way to learn how the game works and is one of the most engaging strategy campaigns available.
4. Mount and Blade 2: Bannerlord
Warfare on the Grandest Scale
It was a challenge to follow up the popular Mount & Blade: Warband, and TaleWorld Entertainment responded by building on what already worked well. While the game doesn’t reinvent the wheel, it successfully captures the qualities that fans loved in the original.
The game blends RPG and strategy elements seamlessly. You’ll not only command your troops in battle, but also manage their supplies and well-being as you travel the campaign map. Knowing when and where to fight is key to surviving in a world that’s always changing.
3. Crusader Kings 3
Political Intrigue which Puts Game of Thrones to Shame
Crusader Kings 3 is a truly distinctive strategy game. If you enjoy political maneuvering, diplomacy, and the medieval period, it’s one of the best choices available. The game quickly immerses you in a dynamic world where numerous rival families are constantly vying for your power and status.

You can begin the game as a simple noble or a wandering adventurer, and eventually build a vast empire, even launching religious wars that change the world. It might seem complex initially, but you’ll quickly learn the ropes and start planning your own strategies to create a lasting dynasty.

Stellaris is another excellent strategy game from Paradox Interactive, this time set in space. What makes Stellaris special is its incredible depth – you can create and play as a huge variety of alien races, with different governments, beliefs, and ways to grow your empire. This means every game feels unique and offers a fresh experience.
Begin with a small fleet and unexplored worlds, then expand your faction into a powerful interstellar empire, building a dominant fleet and conquering all who stand in your way. With countless ways to play and excellent downloadable content, Stellaris continues to be the ultimate large-scale science fiction strategy game.
