A Chinese family is facing fines after burying a Mercedes-Benz with their relative as part of a traditional offering.
It’s a common tradition to bury loved ones with something they cherished, like a favorite item or outfit. For example, many sports fans are buried with their team scarves or jerseys.
In China, a family is facing criticism from local authorities after burying a Mercedes-Benz car with a deceased family member as a sort of ritual offering.
According to the South China Morning Post, a family in Liaoyang, China, buried a $160,000 Mercedes-Benz S450L – complete with a personalized license plate – alongside a family member who passed away. The family believed this would ensure the deceased had wealth in the afterlife, especially since they were a passionate car collector during their life.

The South China Morning Post reports that local authorities scolded the Jin family for burying the car without permission. They were also required to apologize for doing so.
Adding to their problems, they’re likely to be fined and will also have to pay for the car to be removed and the land restored.

The cost isn’t clear, but the South China Morning Post reported that hiring helpers cost around $70 each, and an official custom license plate could potentially be worth as much as $37,000.
