YouTube has recently revealed more information about how users can control the videos recommended to them, providing a clearer understanding of how to influence its recommendation system.
Google recently explained – as noted by PPC Land and in a Google support post on March 3rd – how users can customize the videos and content shown on their homepage.
Okay, so YouTube’s recommendations seem to be all about what I’ve watched before, what videos I click on, and how much I interact with stuff, right? But apparently, YouTube says we actually have more say in what we see than a lot of people think. It’s good to know I’m not totally at the mercy of the algorithm!
How to adjust YouTube’s algorithm
A simple way to change the videos YouTube suggests is to clear or pause your watch history. Since recommendations are based on what you’ve watched before, deleting that information can really change what shows up on your homepage. Turning off watch history also means YouTube will have less information to personalize your recommendations in the future.
The simple “Not interested” button helps YouTube understand what videos you don’t want to see in your recommendations. If you select “Don’t recommend channel,” you’re telling YouTube you don’t want to see any videos from that creator in the future.

YouTube has confirmed you can delete all your past feedback through your Google account settings. This means clearing your history of things you’ve marked as “Not interested” or channels you’ve said you “Don’t recommend” will reset the recommendations YouTube makes for you. Unfortunately, you can’t undo just one piece of feedback – you have to clear everything at once if you want to change your previous choices.
These settings only affect people who are logged into an account. Visitors who aren’t signed in won’t experience the same customized features or have the ability to manage feedback directly.
Even though YouTube provides some tools for managing content, it still lacks key features like the ability to completely block certain topics or keywords. Plus, you have less control over recommendations in Shorts, autoplay, and search compared to the main YouTube feed.
As a long-time YouTube user, I’ve always wondered how their recommendations work. It’s great to see they’re finally explaining how we can actually control what videos show up for us! They haven’t revealed everything about the algorithm, which is understandable, but giving us tools to personalize our experience is a really positive step.
YouTube is trying out a new feature called “Your Custom Feed” to help stop users from seeing unwanted recommendations after watching just one video. Testing started in November 2025, and it’s still being developed.
