You can now pay $1M to reserve a hotel stay on the moon

A new company in California is letting people book future trips to the moon, though it’s a very expensive option.

It’s been over half a century since the last lunar landing, but a new mission is planned for early 2026. Although many still see establishing settlements in space as something from science fiction, one California-based company is working to become the first to turn a profit from space exploration.

Galactic Resource Utilization Space, or GRU Space, is a new company aiming to create places for people to live on the moon. They plan to start by testing inflatable buildings in 2031, with the goal of building lunar ‘hotels’ by 2032.

The plan involves constructing hotels on Earth and transporting them to their final location using a large lander. Each hotel would be designed to comfortably accommodate up to four people for stays lasting several days.

The hotel is built to last for a decade and promises stunning views of the Moon and Earth. Guests can also look forward to unique experiences like Moonwalks, driving, golfing, and other lunar adventures, according to the hotel’s website.

Tech startup offering lunar vacations for $1M fee

Okay, so I just heard about this and it’s wild. Apparently, if you want to be one of the first tourists to go to the moon, you’re gonna need serious cash. This company, GRU, is taking reservations now, and you need to put down anywhere from $250,000 to $1 million just to hold your spot, depending on what kind of trip you want. And get this – the total cost? They’re saying it could easily be over $10 million! Talk about a pricey vacation.

Simply providing funding isn’t enough to become a space traveler. Potential astronauts will also need to apply, and if selected, participate in a unique bidding process where invitations are linked to particular mission jobs and the length of time they’ll spend on the moon.

So, I was checking out this space exploration site, and they basically said we’re stuck on Earth until we figure out how to live on the Moon. They call cracking that code the ‘Promethean moment’ – like, it’s the thing that will let us build real settlements and eventually have tons of people living not just on the Moon, but on Mars and everywhere else out there. It’s a big deal, apparently – the first step to becoming a truly multi-planetary species!

So, GRU Space is working on building bigger habitats on the moon! They’re planning to use stuff they find on the moon to make these inflatable modules, and eventually connect them together to create living spaces big enough for about ten people. Pretty cool, right?

With the cost of sending things into space decreasing and launches becoming more frequent, establishing a long-term base on the Moon is becoming more feasible. This also paves the way for missions to other planets, like Mars – a goal shared by visionaries such as Elon Musk, who hopes to eventually build human settlements there and expand our reach into space.
