As a devoted fan of Yellowstone, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia as we bid farewell to John Dutton, but at the same time, I’m brimming with excitement for what’s to come. With the absence of John Dutton, it seems that the mantle of leadership has fallen squarely on the shoulders of Cole Hauser’s character, Rip.
Since John Dutton is no longer present, it seems another character will need to step up and assume leadership duties in Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2, and based on recent hints, it appears that Cole Hauser’s character, Rip, could be the perfect fit for the role.
Across the Dutton family lineage, no rancher has ever enjoyed a more devoted right-hand man than John did with Rip. Following his act of taking in Rip after he killed John’s father as a child and offering him a home and work, this young man grew up seeing John as something of a paternal figure – one whom he would be willing to protect at all costs.
In any situation requiring treachery or eliminating foes, Rip is the one John turns to first, demonstrating an unwavering loyalty that money can’t purchase. This loyalty may have proven beneficial for John in the climactic episodes of Taylor Sheridan’s drama series.
Since Kevin Costner (as John Dutton) is no longer around, it seems that a new leading figure should step up. Given the circumstances, it appears that Rip might be the right candidate for the job.
In an interview with CBS Mornings, Hauser commented on Part 2: “It’s now time for maturity. A large part of this year is about rebuilding and progressing. Rip carries a significant duty in managing the ranch, while also supporting Beth and the family.
“It’s a different year. Taylor wrote an unbelievable year.”
It seems likely that Kayce, being John’s last living son biologically, may have taken over the leadership role. Yet, following his spiritual journey in Season 4, there are indications that Kayce is deciding against managing the ranch, instead focusing on his wife and child.
It’s quite possible that Rip will take on the role of managing the ranch for them, and with Beth by his side, they are undeniably ready to employ some ruthless strategies to ensure their control. (In the trailer, Rip can be seen setting a car, and possibly someone, on fire – quite alarming.)
Yellowstone returns on November 10 on the Paramount Network.
