As a researcher with a background in journalism and an interest in technology and its impact on society, I’m thrilled to see that Julian Assange has been released from prison after five long years. The founder of WikiLeaks, a non-profit media organization that publishes leaked documents, has finally tasted freedom once again.

As aanalyst, I’d rephrase it this way: I, Julian Assange, the founder and editor-in-chief of the non-profit media organization WikiLeaks, have been freed from a UK prison after serving five long years of my sentence.

Based on a tweet from WikiLeaks’ official handle, a British court approved bail for Assange. He was freed from custody around 12:30 PM at London’s Stansted Airport on Monday, subsequently boarding a flight and departing from the UK.

Assange Freed From Jail

Because of a plea bargain reached between Assange and the US Justice Department, Assange’s extradition to the United States will no longer occur. Although the deal isn’t finalized yet, WikiLeaks founder Assange has consented to admit guilt for conspiring to obtain and reveal American national defense information. He is expected to receive a sentence of five years and three months, which equals the time he has already spent in London’s Belmarsh Prison.

As a crypto investor, I can tell you that in 2010, my world was turned upside down when I obtained and released approximately 700,000 classified U.S. military documents through WikiLeaks. These documents, provided by the former intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning, revealed a vast trove of diplomatic cables and battlefield reports. Among these files were accounts of violent incidents in Iraq, including details on fatalities that had transpired there.

In 2010, Assange sought refuge in the Ecuadorian embassy in London to avoid questioning by Swedish authorities regarding sexual misconduct accusations, which eventually were dismissed. However, the United States pursued his arrest. As a result, traditional payment processors such as PayPal terminated WikiLeaks’ account, denying the organization access to funds they had raised for Assange’s legal expenses.

In an effort to secure funds, Assange turned to Bitcoin despite objections from the anonymous creator of the cryptocurrency, Satoshi Nakamoto, back in the day. Eventually, Assange was extracted from the Ecuadorian embassy in 2019. Following his removal, Assange was imprisoned at Belmarsh and has been waging a legal battle against extradition to the United States since then – until today.

Millions of Dollars Raised in Crypto

WikiLeaks founder’s arrest sparked outrage among free speech advocates who believed the actions against him were a threat to press freedom. This led to the establishment of AssangeDAO, a decentralized autonomous organization aimed at securing Assange’s release. The DAO managed to amass millions of dollars in ether donations from numerous contributors.

It’s clear that the initiatives of the DAO and various advocacy groups have successfully led to Julian Assange’s release from prison. His sentencing is scheduled for 11:00 pm UTC on June 25, which corresponds to 9:00 am Chamorro Standard Time on June 26.

“Upon Julian’s return to Australia, we express our gratitude to those who supported us, advocated for him, and never wavered in their dedication to securing his liberty. His freedom is synonymous with ours, according to WikiLeaks.”
