Why has Armie Hammer movie Citizen Vigilante been banned?

So, I just heard about Armie Hammer’s new film, Citizen Vigilante, and it’s already getting a ton of heat. Apparently, Germany has banned it, and the director, Uwe Boll, is calling it straight-up censorship. It sounds like things are getting messy even before the movie’s really out!

Armie Hammer has appeared in several popular films, including The Social Network, The Man From UNCLE, The Lone Ranger, and Call Me By Your Name.

In 2021, Armie Hammer faced public backlash and a police investigation after private messages and accusations of sexual misconduct and abuse from several women were made public. Although he wasn’t criminally charged, the scandal led to the end of his career.

Five years after a career slump, he’s returning to acting with a role in the new film, Citizen Vigilante, directed by Uwe Boll. However, audiences in Germany won’t have the chance to watch it.

Why has Citizen Vigilante been banned in Germany?

The film Citizen Vigilante has been banned in Germany after the country’s ratings board, the FSK, refused to give it a classification, preventing its release and distribution.

Director Uwe Boll says the film’s board felt it encouraged people to take the law into their own hands. He told Indie-Cinema that it would have been impossible to release the movie in Germany due to censorship concerns, explaining, “They said you simply can’t show this movie there.” He also noted a tendency for self-censorship, where people avoid discussing certain sensitive topics.

The official synopsis for Citizen Vigilante calls it “Death Wish for the 21st century,” and says: “The movie follows vigilante Sanders, who takes justice in his own hands and hunts down criminals. While Sanders gains more and more fame, and the public sees him as a hero, Interpol chief Henry believes he is a threat to society and is circling in on him.”

Okay, so the director, Boll, told me the movie ‘Citizen Vigilante’ is a really dark and intense thriller. He said it deals with some seriously heavy stuff – crimes involving migrants, including things like mass rape and other awful acts – and that’s actually part of the story, not just background noise. It’s definitely not a feel-good movie, that’s for sure.

To clarify, Boll insists the film isn’t anti-immigration. He says it focuses on criminals – specifically drug dealers, school bullies, and those who abuse women.

This story isn’t just about a single crime, although those things do occur. The core issue is the feeling that criminals aren’t facing consequences for their actions – they aren’t being imprisoned or deported. This is especially true in places like Germany, where serious offenses sometimes go unpunished.

I’m really angry about it. I don’t usually lean conservative, but I’ll definitely speak up when I see something seriously messed up.

Although viewers in Germany won’t be able to see Citizen Vigilante, it’s being released in the US and Canada this week. Director Uwe Boll explained that this is a common practice and that there were no issues with the film’s content.
