Season 5 of The Boys featured a return appearance by Maverick, a character from the Gen V series. This brings up some difficult memories for Hughie, echoing a shocking moment from the very first season. Be warned – spoilers follow!
The first three episodes of the season finale have already featured the introduction of Teenage Kix, the return of Soldier Boy, and left viewers wondering about Black Noir’s fate. Plus, we’ve seen Vought’s Freedom Camps and the emergence of a dangerous virus affecting Supes…
The third episode of Season 5 largely focuses on Hughie and his team’s search for the V1 serum. This serum can protect people from the virus and explains how Soldier Boy managed to survive the events of the previous episode.
During their journey, the group encounters Stan Edgar, the former CEO of Vought, who remains hidden in the same underground bunker he used with his granddaughter during Season 2 of Gen V. They’re also unexpectedly joined by Maverick, a Supe with the power of invisibility – and he turns out to be the son of Translucent.
Who is Maverick in The Boys?

Maverick is the son of Translucent, a superhero with the ability to become invisible, who died in Season 1 of The Boys in a very messy way – Butcher and Hughie used dynamite to destroy him from the inside. We briefly saw Maverick, played by Charles Altow, at his father’s funeral in Season 2, and he appeared without his invisibility. Later, in Season 1 of Gen V, he showed up as an invisible character, voiced by Nicholas Hamilton.
In the new series, Marie Moreau and Emma’s resident advisor, Maverick, appears as a ghostly presence – just a pair of floating glasses and a baseball cap – due to his abilities. This look is reminiscent of a character in Season 5 of ‘The Boys,’ who also features a floating hat, glasses, shorts, and Crocs.
Maverick is now with Edgar, hiding from Vought, because he wants to help take down Homelander – he believes Homelander killed his father. He doesn’t know that Butcher and Hughie secretly killed Translucent with explosives, and Hughie feels bad about it, though he never gets to tell Translucent.
This leads him to eagerly confront Cindy, Deep, and Black Noir when they arrive at the bunker. Unfortunately, things don’t go his way, as Cindy ultimately kills Maverick by the end of episode 3 of The Boys Season 5.
She intended to attack Hughie, but accidentally hit Maverick instead – he was standing in front of him and she couldn’t see him. This results in Maverick’s death. As we anticipate how Hughie will react to this loss, especially considering his past actions in Season 5 of The Boys, here’s an update on the upcoming spinoff, Vought Rising, and what’s known about Season 3 of Gen V.
