Wow, episode 7 of ‘Welcome to Derry’ just blew my mind! They revealed a huge twist about Mrs. Kersh (Madeleine Stowe) right after that terrible fire, and honestly, I think it’s going to completely change how we see Pennywise and the whole ‘IT’ story going forward. Be warned, though – major spoilers are coming if you haven’t watched yet!
I was really fascinated to learn more about Pennywise’s history in the new series! It doesn’t just show us what happened before the Losers Club faced him in the 2017 movie – it goes back to 1965 and really digs into who he was before he became the terrifying clown we all know. It’s cool to see the origins of such an iconic villain and how he became the monster he is.
It, the entity at the heart of the story, took on the form of Pennywise after observing a circus performer named Bob Gray. The series also revealed a surprising connection: Lilly Bainbridge (Clara Stack) unknowingly became friends with Bob Gray’s daughter, Ingrid Kersh. Ingrid deliberately fueled racial conflict in the town, hoping to draw Pennywise out into the open so she could reunite with her father.
This decision proved to be a mistake for her, especially when she finally confronted Pennywise again. Here’s a breakdown of what happened to Mrs. Kersh in Episode 7 of ‘Welcome to Derry,’ and how it connects to the overall story.
What happens to Mrs. Kersh?

In the final moments of Episode 7, Pennywise traps Mrs. Kersh in a coma using the Deadlights, turning her into one of his monstrous forms. Once the Black Spot burns down, Pennywise brutally kills Ingrid’s husband, Stan Kersh (played by Larry Day), by decapitating him with a butcher knife, all while Mrs. Kersh, dressed as a clown, witnesses the horrific act.
Once she confessed to the clown that she wished to unleash the town’s anger onto him, she understood Pennywise wasn’t her father. The creature then opened his mouth, revealing the terrifying Deadlights within, which immediately put Mrs. Kersh in a daze.
It initially appears as though Mrs. Kersh has died, but the next day, firefighters discover she’s still alive while clearing the scene. Her children see her being carried out on a stretcher, looking vacantly at the sky. Then, her eyes suddenly focus on them, and she gives them a disturbing, fixed stare.
This basically shows that Pennywise is controlling Mrs. Kersh and can transform her into a terrifying creature.
In the movie IT: Chapter Two, Beverly Marsh (played by Jessica Chastain) goes to visit Mrs. Kersh at the apartment where Beverly grew up. The elderly woman suddenly becomes frighteningly distorted, stretching and growing an extra mouth on her neck, before attacking Beverly.
What are the Deadlights?

If you’re curious about what the Deadlights are, they’re essentially It’s true form. While It often appears as something else to scare its victims, its real body is the swirling orange lights you see inside Pennywise.
So when Mrs. Kersh is put into a coma, it’s because she’s paralyzed by the creature’s real form.
It typically only transforms into its true, frightening shape when attempting to instill absolute dread in those it hunts; otherwise, it simply consumes them, as demonstrated by Pennywise throughout the story.
In the seventh episode, Pennywise appears from a gruesome nest of body parts after the military destroys one of the meteor pillars holding him captive in Derry. This suggests we likely haven’t seen the last of the creature and its terrifying Deadlights before the series finale.
Before you finish watching “It: Welcome to Derry”, learn about a potential plot hole that could have helped the military capture Pennywise. Also, discover why the show’s ending was altered and why the story is now revisiting the past.
