Valve recently showed off its new gaming devices, including the Steam Frame, a VR headset capable of playing both virtual and traditional games. It seems Steam Frame will also allow Steam users to play Android games directly on their system.
Valve is making it easier for developers to bring their Android apps to Steam. They’ll be providing a new developer kit, called Steam Frame, specifically for those already familiar with creating apps and VR experiences for Android phones using APKs.
Valve engineer Jeremy Selan says their goal is to make the process completely seamless for users. They want players to simply own games on Steam, download them, and start playing. The focus is on supporting VR developers who want to easily bring their existing VR content—especially titles they’ve already made for mobile platforms—to Steam. They should be able to do this without extra effort, and the games will work right away on the device.
Steam Frame smoothly runs Android games and apps because it uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip – the same type found in many Android devices. This means you can easily play your Android games and use VR apps directly on Steam Frame without any compatibility issues.
Alongside Steam Deck, Valve revealed Steam Machine, a device designed to let you play PC games on your TV like a traditional console. They also introduced a new Steam Controller. While Valve hasn’t announced prices yet, hardware engineer Yazan Aldehayyat told IGN that the Steam Machine will probably be priced similarly to competing consoles to make it an accessible option for gamers.
According to Aldehayyat, the Steam Machine will likely offer a competitive price and excellent value for people building their own PCs with comparable specs and performance.
