The third installment of the game “Honkai: Star Rail” is ramping up its character releases, with the latest unveilings including the upcoming Quantum-Nihility unit known as Cipher. While official sources have only disclosed fundamental background details about this character, it’s suggested that he’s a renegade and Chrysos Heir, wielding divine power from Zagreus. Given their familiarity with data mining and leaks, dedicated Trailblazers may already be aware of this unit for several months. A trustworthy source, Seele Leaks, has recently disclosed information regarding Cipher’s full abilities, Eidolons, and Traces. This data is tentative but provides a foundation for players to appreciate why they should not overlook this unit.
Some gamers might be thrilled about Cipher due to its association with the Nihility path, a captivating character class in the game. As per the official description of Honkai: Star Rail, characters on this path inflict debuffs on enemies to weaken them during battle. This path is known for specialists who deal time-based damage like Kafka, supportive characters such as Jiaoqiu, and powerful damage dealers who excel in ultimate abilities like Acheron. Rumors suggest that Cipher may fall under the support and ult-focused damage dealer roles.
Cipher Could be One of the More Versatile Nihility Units in Honkai: Star Rail
Information regarding Cipher’s skills has been derived from leaked pre-release data at this point in time. Consequently, players are advised to prepare for potential modifications when Cipher is officially introduced in Honkai: Star Rail Version 3.3.
Cipher’s power lies in the connection between her Talent and Ultimate, which works as follows:
- Talent: At the start of a teammate’s action, Cipher inflicts her status effect “Foretold” on an opponent with the highest HP if no enemies are marked with it yet. This effect can only be active on the latest target, which could mean that only one enemy can be inflicted with it at a time. When an ally attacks an enemy with this Foretold, Cipher goes into her “Wealth Bond” state, which lets her record a percentage of the total damage (excluding True DMG) taken by that enemy. She also does a follow-up attack after the teammate’s attack. It is unclear whether the follow-up will count in Wealth Bond’s total damage record.
- Ultimate: Cipher deals Quantum damage equal to a percentage of her ATK to one enemy, with additional True DMG equal to Wealth Bond’s recorded value to the target and adjacent units. Using the ult also resets Wealth Bond’s value and the amount of follow-up attacks that Cipher can trigger using Foretold.
Cipher operates in a way that’s quite similar to her counterpart from the Nihility unit, Kafka. Both characters accumulate a specific resource (DOT effects for Kafka and Wealth Bonds for Cipher) and then release it in a single powerful burst of damage. To maximize the impact of Cipher’s ultimate ability, players should build up as much Wealth Bond value as they can. The details aren’t clear if there’s a limit to this mechanic. If there is, it would be best to unleash the ult when the Wealth Bond has reached its maximum capacity. However, if there’s no limit, players could potentially keep stacking it and deal massive damage to end a fight.
Cipher’s Skill and Traces Ensure Consistent Status Effect Uptime and Faster Wealth Bond Stacking
In this unit’s ability, it applies the effect of ‘Foretold’ to a target, causing it to take a portion of its Attack Power as damage, plus damaging nearby foes as well. Additionally, its ‘traces’ empower it to deal more impactful blows.
- Trace One: Cipher reduces all enemies’ DEF by a certain percentage when she’s in combat.
- Trace Two: Wealth Bond records a percentage of total DMG taken by enemies adjacent to the target afflicted by Foretold.
- Trace Three: Increases Cipher’s follow-up attack damage and her CRIT Rate also improves the rate at which she stacks Wealth Bond.
Predicted and Cipher’s Trace #1’s decrease in DEF makes her a great pick for a secondary DPS in teams that include Dr. Ratio or Feixiao. She could also work well with Acheron’s team due to her potential Eidolon 1, which boosts the damage a target enemy takes when Cipher attacks them. Additionally, Cipher’s characteristic Light Cone ability may offer substantial DEF reduction from her skill. However, whether she can serve effectively as the main carry will hinge on her multipliers, details of which will be revealed in future updates.
