According to reports, Ubisoft has stopped working on the Watch Dogs series. Industry insider Tom Henderson says the company is no longer developing new games in the franchise.
I was listening to the Insider Gaming podcast, specifically an episode called ‘The End For Ubisoft and Xbox Developer Direct Reactions! It’s Our One Year Anniversary!’, and Henderson was talking about what happened after Watch Dogs Legion came out. He was sharing what went on behind the scenes at Ubisoft after the game’s release, and it was really interesting to hear his take on everything.
Henderson reports that the developers of Watch Dogs Legion believed the game wasn’t fully ready when it launched and needed more time in development. After the game released, the team quickly shifted to a different project that had been in the works for years, but that project was ultimately scrapped.
During the podcast, Henderson clarified that the project which was cancelled wasn’t a Watch Dogs game, and that there are currently no plans to continue the Watch Dogs series.
Watch Dogs IP is reportedly dead
“As far as I’m aware at this moment in time, the Watch Dogs IP is completely dead,” Henderson said.
He also mentioned that even though some Ubisoft staff still enjoy the series and make fan art, the company hasn’t consistently supported it, despite the interesting ideas behind it.
So, Watch Dogs Legion came out in 2020, and it was a pretty big change for the series. The coolest thing was being able to play as literally anyone in the game – it was set in a futuristic London, which looked amazing. Honestly, though, it didn’t really stick with players the way Ubisoft was hoping. Reviews were kind of all over the place, and it just didn’t catch on long-term, which was a shame.
Henderson’s statements follow Ubisoft’s ongoing efforts to reorganize how it makes games and re-evaluate its biggest franchises. While Ubisoft hasn’t said anything publicly about the future of Watch Dogs, there’s been no official confirmation that the series is ending.
