However, the recent surge in Trump-related memecoins following the assassination attempt on former US President Donald Trump has left me both astounded and intrigued.
An unsuccessful assassination attempt on the former US President and potential 2024 presidential candidate Donald Trump has led to a price increase for memecoins linked to him. At the same time, his chances of winning this year’s presidential election have grown on the prediction market Polymarket.
Trump-associated memcoin MAGA (previously known as MAGA Token), boasting the largest market capitalization among Trump-themed cryptocurrencies, experienced a significant surge of approximately 30% following the recent incident. Consequently, its value escalated from $6.31 to a peak of $10.36 within this brief period. As a result, MAGA’s market capitalization swelled dramatically, reaching an impressive $469 million – a remarkable increase from its previous value of $293 million, all transpiring within the span of just 45 minutes post the incident.
As a crypto investor, I’ve noticed an intriguing trend: several memecoins linked to Trump experienced significant price increases following a tragic event. For instance, Tremp on Solana saw its value surge by more than 60% within an hour of the incident. Similarly, MAGA Hat witnessed a rise of over 20% during the same time frame.
The probability of Donald Trump winning the 2024 Presidential Election on Polymarket’s market noticeably increased, reaching 68%, following a recent event. Previously, his chances were calculated at 60%. Consequently, Joe Biden’s likelihood of victory decreased from 30% to 15%.
On July 13, during a rally speech in Butler, Pennsylvania, Trump was the target of an unsuccessful assassination attempt. Shots rang out from beyond the event perimeter. Trump reacted swiftly by hitting the ground as bullets approached. Protective agents of the Secret Service quickly moved to shield him.
After Trump’s sudden illness, he was swiftly taken to a healthcare center. His campaign subsequently issued a statement reassuring everyone that the former president was “doing well.” Unfortunately, during the rally, a single person lost their life in the chaos, and the shooter was fatally stopped by the Secret Service.
Trump expressed his sympathies in a Truth Social post towards the families of the person who perished and another who was severely injured at one of his rallies. He also revealed that he himself had been wounded, taking a bullet that penetrated the top portion of his right ear.
