The Testaments Cast Turned to Medieval Times for Comfort

When things got tough while filming the first season of Hulu’s The Testaments, the cast found ways to relax and support each other. They bonded with the crew, sang songs, and frequently visited a Medieval Times dinner theater in Toronto. As Chase Infiniti shared at the Tribeca Festival’s Vulture panel, it was great to escape the dark world of Gilead and just have fun. Lucy Halliday added that it was a place where they could really let loose and shout without worry.

Ann Dowd and Yvonne Strahovski were joined by Elisabeth Moss, who also executive produced The Testaments, for a panel discussion about the show’s first season. They talked about how their characters evolved, the importance of the show’s visuals—sets and costumes—and the lasting influence of The Handmaid’s Tale as a significant political statement. The Testaments continues the story of Gilead, but offers a fresh perspective by focusing on teenage girls at a school for the daughters of Gilead’s leaders. Infiniti plays Agnes, a high-ranking Gilead official’s daughter, and is paired with Lucy Halliday’s character, Daisy, one of the “Pearl Girls.” Daisy seems like a Canadian trying to fit into Gilead society, but is secretly a spy recruited by Moss, who reprises her role as June Osborne from The Handmaid’s Tale.

Compared to The Handmaid’s Tale, The Testaments offers a more optimistic view of Gilead. This is partly due to its focus on younger characters, but also because the story centers on people challenging and dismantling the beliefs they grew up with. According to author Margaret Atwood, this shift in perspective is key. She explains that hope emerges when characters begin to question everything they’ve been taught and realize that long-held beliefs aren’t always correct.
