PlayStation 5 owners wanting more storage space might be surprised to learn about a new, officially licensed SSD from SanDisk – it costs more than three PS5 Pro consoles put together!
The Optimus GX Pro 850P NVMe SSD is a new storage upgrade for PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro consoles, letting players add more space for games – which are getting bigger all the time. But people are mostly discussing how much it costs.
SanDisk offers its top-of-the-line storage drive in sizes from 1TB up to 8TB. Currently, the 8TB version is on sale for $2,960 – a discount from its usual price of $3,700.
To give you an idea of the cost, the PlayStation 5 Pro currently sells for about $700 and comes with a 2TB storage drive. This means the 8TB Optimus GX Pro 850P costs more than three PS5 Pro consoles.
Even the smaller storage options aren’t very affordable. The 2TB version costs $760, which is actually more than the price of a regular PlayStation 5 with a disc drive.
SanDisk’s new SSD arrives during ongoing memory shortages
The Optimus GX Pro 850P is a fast NVMe SSD that uses PCIe 4.0 technology. It can read data at speeds up to 7,300MB/s and write data at up to 6,300MB/s. It also has a built-in heatsink, making it suitable for use with the Sony PlayStation 5.
These new specs are very similar to those of the popular WD_BLACK SN850X SSD, a drive often used with PlayStation consoles. It seems SanDisk is now taking over this product line as they move away from the WD_BLACK brand.
This release happens while the tech industry continues to struggle with limited memory chip supplies. Previously, the older version of this product could be found on sale for under $600 in 2024, showing how much prices have increased recently.
As a gamer, it’s been frustrating to see prices go up on consoles lately! Both Sony and Microsoft have hiked their prices – Sony did it with some of their PlayStation stuff recently, and Microsoft announced Xbox will be more expensive starting in 2025. It just feels like gaming is getting pricier all around.
Nintendo revealed that the upcoming Switch 2 will cost $50 more in the US, starting this September.
Valve brought back its Steam Deck OLED models in late May, but with higher price tags – up to $300 more expensive. The company said this was due to increasing costs for memory and storage, a problem impacting many tech companies.
