A special moment in The Super Mario Bros. Movie suggests that some missing characters from the games might appear in future films. While Nintendo and Illumination have successfully brought many Super Mario characters to life on screen, several popular faces haven’t been included yet.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie significantly expanded the range of Nintendo characters available for future films. It successfully introduced popular figures like Yoshi, Rosalina, and Bowser Jr. from the Super Mario universe. Plus, the movie’s end-credits scene revealed Princess Daisy, a character fans were eager to see.
If they make another Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Wario and Waluigi would be great additions. They’re two of the most famous Mario characters who haven’t been in either film yet. Toadette could also make an appearance, which wouldn’t be surprising.
Fans are also wondering about the Koopalings, who have shown up as challenging mini-bosses in Super Mario games since the late 1980s. Like Wario, Waluigi, and Toadette, there’s no official confirmation they’ll be in a third Super Mario movie. However, if the filmmakers follow the pattern established with the character Wart, the Koopalings have a strong possibility of appearing.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Began What Could Be An Amazing Trend For The Franchise
The Super Mario Bros. Movie jumps over a lot of the history from previous games, since Super Mario Galaxy came out in 2007. Despite this, the movie includes many nods to older titles, and gives a particularly big homage to the game that followed the very first Super Mario and Luigi adventure.
The original Super Mario Bros. game, released in 1985, heavily influenced The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Three years later, Super Mario Bros. 2 continued the adventures of Mario and Luigi, sending them, along with Toad and Princess Peach, to the land of Subcon to defeat the villain, Wart.
As a continuation of the original Super Mario game, it made sense that the new movie would reference Super Mario Bros. 2. The casino scene was full of hidden nods to the 1988 game, including appearances by its final boss, Wart, and three mini-bosses: Birdo, Mouser, and Clawgrip.
This film sets a promising pattern for potential sequels. Adapting every game into a movie isn’t realistic, but including nods to different games, like the reference to Super Mario Bros. 2 in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, feels achievable. If the next film follows suit, we might see a similar tribute to Super Mario Bros. 3 and its focus on Mario’s fights with the Koopalings.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Shows How The Koopalings Could Work
Adapting Super Mario Bros. 3 into a story would be difficult because it features seven unique Koopaling characters. The game centers around Mario and Luigi’s journey through different worlds, each one taken over by one of these Koopalings, who serve as Bowser’s main helpers.
A third Super Mario movie could follow a similar approach to the first, but introducing seven new villains, on top of likely returning characters like Bowser and Bowser Jr., might create an overcrowded film. It could be better for the sequel to focus on a single main villain and their helpers, like the original movie did with Wart.
Similar to what we saw in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the next film could include a segment inspired by Super Mario Bros. 3. This could involve Mario and friends encountering the seven Koopalings. Putting Ludwig, Morton, Roy, Wendy, Larry, Iggy, and Lemmy all together in one exciting scene could be a highlight of the series.
