Despite building suspense, the movie The Requin ended disappointingly, with a quick and emotionally unsatisfying resolution that slowed the story down. Following the success of the shark thriller Thrash, Netflix released The Requin, which tells the story of Jaelyn and Kyle, a couple mourning a loss, whose vacation in Vietnam turns into a fight for survival when a storm and great white sharks strand them at sea.
Jaelyn and James were in a dire situation, made even worse by Kyle’s already serious leg injury. This meant Jaelyn had to fight to save them both before it was too late. Unfortunately, a shark attack further injured Kyle, biting off his leg. Though Jaelyn managed to rescue Kyle from the shark, the injury left him unable to move.
The film The Requin first came out in the US on January 28, 2022, and later became available on Netflix on April 17. The movie features Alicia Silverstone, James Tupper, and Deirdre O’Connell.
The Requin Movie Ending Explained To Confused Viewers

I was totally devastated when Kyle died in The Requin. It just started this awful series of events for Jaelyn, really pushing her to her breaking point and leaving her completely alone and traumatized. Just when she thought things couldn’t get worse, she met this incredibly kind Vietnamese fisherman who tried to help her, but then… another shark attacked him, and it was just horrific. He didn’t make it, and it was so sad after he’d tried to save her.
To make matters worse, Jaelyn was already deeply affected by the loss of her baby and now Kyle, and she has a strong aversion to blood. Despite all of this, and even after suffering a shark bite to her thigh, she managed to survive and ultimately defeat the shark.
After the shark died—a scene similar to how the Megalodon perished in the first The Meg film—the movie ends with Jaelyn spotting an island. It seems some fishermen there may have seen her.
Jaelyn noticed a buoy with a warning – “Danger Beyond This Point” – which meant she was drifting towards the shallower waters near the shore.

A lot of viewers believe the ending shows the main character imagining she’s rescued, while actually still being lost at sea. This idea comes from the movie’s frequent use of flashbacks, trauma, and dreamlike scenes. For example, Jaelyn has a vision of Kyle urging her to fight for her life and keep trying to survive.
The movie doesn’t present the “Danger” buoy as something Jaelyn imagines. It simply marks the spot where she’ll be rescued. Because of these clear signals – like the presence of other fishermen – the ending of The Requin isn’t meant to be interpreted as having a hidden, complex meaning.

The ending of The Requin confirms that Jaelyn made it through the dangerous encounter with the sharks. The buoy seen at the end doesn’t represent a surprising twist; it simply shows she was close to land and about to be rescued.
It’s perfectly ironic that after everything Jaelyn has been through – narrowly escaping sharks and watching Kyle die – the first thing that seems like a threat to her is just a harmless buoy. It highlights how shaken she is that even a normal safety marker appears dangerous.
Why The Requin’s Movie Ending Has a Deeper Meaning

The ending of The Requin showed Jaelyn beginning to heal after a very difficult experience, suggesting a fresh start for her. Many viewers interpret her final line – a defiant “Ha!” – as a sign that she’s regaining her strength and moving forward from a traumatic event.
Despite some criticism of the film’s special effects and overall execution, the ending of The Requin shows Jaelyn not only surviving the shark attacks, but also rediscovering her will to live and finding the strength to move on, even when things seem impossible.
After a careful look, The Requin honestly, though not perfectly, shows us how someone can bounce back from tragedy. Jaelyn isn’t just someone defined by her loss; she finds a strong will to live and move forward.
