R. Scott Gemmill, the creator of The Pitt, recently revealed what will happen to two popular characters in Season 3. Joy Kwon (played by Irene Choi) and James Ogilvie (Lucas Iverson) were introduced in Season 2 as medical student interns at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. They both helped the hospital’s doctors and nurses care for patients, and quickly became memorable characters.
R. Scott Gemmill, the creator of The Pitt, told TV Line that Joy and Ogilvie could make a short appearance in Season 3, but it’s not certain yet. He also confirmed that Emma Nolan, the new nurse, will be back for the next season.
TVLine asked, given that Ogilvie and Joy likely won’t be back, what that means for Emma going into the third season.
Okay, so I just got the scoop – Emma is definitely coming back! The showrunner, R. Scott Gemmill, confirmed it. He also hinted we might catch glimpses of the other two characters, though he wasn’t ready to commit to that just yet. Sounds promising, right?
In Season 2 of The Pitt, two new medical students played a key role by offering realistic, yet contrasting, views of what it’s like to train as a doctor.
Joy Kwon initially approached her work with a practical, “just here to do the job” mindset, providing a refreshing contrast to Dr. Robby’s intense work ethic. However, she surprisingly became a key player in Season 2 of The Pitt. Her remarkable ability to remember details proved vital when a significant cyberattack occurred during the season.

Let’s talk about James Ogilvie. Initially, he comes across as a bit of a cocky medical student – the kind who thinks he has all the answers and doesn’t always connect with patients on a human level. But season two really dug into that character, and I was impressed. We saw him face some serious humbling experiences, moments that forced him to really look at his shortcomings. It all built to a fantastic scene with Dr. Whitaker where he actually admitted he wasn’t sure if emergency medicine was even the right path for him. It was a surprisingly vulnerable and compelling arc.

The characters’ short reappearance in The Pitt Season 3 highlights the show’s tendency to bring characters back briefly. This suggests their return might only last for one or two episodes, primarily to set up future storylines for them.
How Joy & Ogilvie Can Return In The Pitt Season 3
Because Season 3 of The Pitt picks up just four months after Season 2, we might see Joy Kwon and James Ogilvie return for a short time. They could be working the night shift, offering a quick consultation, or simply encountering the main team while working on a different case.
It’s also possible that one or both of these characters might unexpectedly appear as patients in Season 3 of The Pitt.
The show could also highlight how medical students realistically learn, perhaps by showing Joy and Ogilvie completing rotations in different hospital departments or observing specialists in fields like general surgery or pediatrics.
Even if Joy and Ogilvie only appear briefly in Season 3, their possible return highlights the show’s dedication to staying true to life, even if it means prioritizing realism over fully utilizing its existing strong cast within the tighter timeframe. Any appearance by these characters would be great, particularly given the new cases related to the winter season.
