The Penguin just did something that the MCU never achieved

The TV show ‘The Penguin‘ has been a success with both critics and audiences, and it’s done something for DC Comics that Marvel hasn’t: it’s spun off a hit series focused on a villain before their appearance as a major antagonist.

Colin Farrell plays Oswald ‘Oz’ Cobb in ‘The Penguin,’ a series that premiered on HBO in September 2024 and quickly earned high praise.

Inspired by The Batman, the show offered a realistic and gritty portrayal of Gotham City’s crime scene, boasting impressive visuals and a talented cast.

The Penguin received several Emmy nominations for 2025 and won one award, making it stand out among other superhero-themed shows.

DC beats Marvel to first Primetime Emmy

Cristin Milioti received the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series for her role as Sofia Falcone in ‘The Penguin.’ This is the first time an actor from a DC or Marvel project has won in this category at the Primetime Emmys.

Allison Milioti won the award for her performance as the complex daughter of a mob boss, beating out strong contenders like Cate Blanchett, Meghann Fahy, Rashida Jones, and Michelle Williams.

Superhero shows are having a breakthrough on television. While they’ve been nominated for Primetime Emmys before, they usually don’t win against dramas and comedies considered more ‘serious’ and often have to settle for awards at the Creative Arts Emmys instead.

Out of all the Marvel TV shows, WandaVision really came close to a major award win, in my opinion. Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany, and Katherine Hahn all got recognized for their acting in 2021, and the show itself was up for best limited series – which is awesome!

Despite attending the awards ceremony, Wanda and Vision didn’t win any of the main awards. The show did receive three wins, but they were in the technical categories: production design, costumes, and original music/lyrics.

The Penguin also excelled creatively, receiving awards for its costumes, makeup, hairstyling, music, sound editing, sound mixing, and visual effects.

Despite the show’s success, a second season of ‘The Penguin’ isn’t guaranteed. Colin Farrell has said it will only happen if the writers develop a compelling story idea.
