The Odyssey Is Going to Be Epic

This year’s biggest movies include the sequel to The Devil Wears Prada, starring Anne Hathaway, the newest Spider-Man film with Tom Holland and Jon Bernthal, and Dune: Part III featuring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson. Christopher Nolan is also releasing The Odyssey, an epic that surprisingly brings together many of those same actors. Matt Damon plays Odysseus, the central character, and his desperate journey to reunite with his family. He declares, “No one can stand between me and home, not even the gods!” – a promise the gods are sure to challenge throughout the film.

The newest trailer finally shows us the supporting characters in detail, with Robert Pattinson standing out as Antinous, one of the men trying to marry Penelope while her husband, Odysseus, is away. Pattinson’s character is marked by a menacing smile and a distinctly American accent, which he uses to mock Odysseus’s son, Telemachus, with the cutting remark, “You’re pining for a daddy.”

Charlize Theron appears as the nymph Calypso, and so far, she’s the only character with godlike powers shown in the movie’s trailers. We haven’t yet seen Zendaya as Athena or Lupita Nyong’o, who may play Helen of Troy. Elliot Page, Mia Goth, and John Leguizamo haven’t appeared in promotional material either. It’s a lot of big names for one film, and even a trailer, so it’s hard to know how Nolan will weave everyone into the story. Find out when The Odyssey arrives in theaters on July 17.
