Okay, movie and TV fans, heads up! I’m about to talk about the latest episode of The Boys – specifically season 5, episode 6, “Though the Heavens Fall.” Just a warning: I’m going to be diving deep into what happens, so if you haven’t seen it yet, you might want to skip this to avoid major spoilers!
With season 5 of The Boys nearing its conclusion, fans will soon discover how the thrilling seven-year saga ends. Throughout the series, The Boys have repeatedly attempted to defeat Homelander, and now they believe they’ve finally found a way – a virus specifically designed to kill superpowered individuals.
Dr. Sameer Shah created the ‘supe’ virus to kill individuals with Compound V in their system. However, there was a significant danger it could spread to all supes. Tests showed the virus was highly effective, but the unique V-One chemical possessed by Soldier Boy granted him immunity – explaining his survival.
It was vital that the heroes stopped Homelander from obtaining this substance, but even after devising a plan with Sister Sage in the most recent episode, he managed to inject himself with V-One. Although it might still have some impact on him, at least the virus won’t be effective against Homelander anymore.
Now that the team’s biggest weapon has failed, everything they’ve accomplished over the last two seasons feels meaningless, leaving them with no obvious path to defeat their enemy. While the episode effectively creates a dark and hopeless mood, the sudden failure of the virus is ultimately disappointing.
Although many viewers might quickly reject this development and assume it’s a dead end, there could be more to it than meets the eye. While it’s no longer helpful in the fight against Homelander, one character could still find a purpose for it, hinting at a potentially dark conclusion.
Homelander’s Immunity To The Supe Virus Makes The Boys’ Efforts Completely Pointless
Throughout the series, The Boys have been determined to find a way to defeat Homelander, even though they know a direct fight is impossible. They’ve been relying on the supe virus as their most promising strategy. However, the latest episode of The Boys season 5 delivered a major setback: Soldier Boy unexpectedly gave his son the V-One.
Now that Homelander can’t be affected by the supe virus, creating it doesn’t seem worth the cost. While it worked on supes like The Deep and Sister Sage, saving them isn’t worth the lives of Annie, Kimiko, Butcher, Ryan, and the students from Gen V. All the effort put into developing the virus now feels like a waste of time.
What really struck me about the finale wasn’t just the sheer effort – and danger – the team went through trying to engineer that virus and keep V-One out of Homelander’s hands. It genuinely amplified the pain of the ending. And honestly, the cracks within The Boys themselves this season were heartbreaking, especially Butcher’s complete lack of empathy at times. It made the whole arc feel so much more fraught and, ultimately, tragic.
The team’s ongoing attempts to defeat Homelander are driving them apart and changing who they are. For example, MM is starting to act like Butcher, and Starlight is losing faith. Their disagreements recently escalated into a fight within Fort Harmony, nearly causing a catastrophe, and highlighting the immense strain they’re all under.
If all the suffering and loss had at least resulted in defeating Homelander, it might have felt worth it. But instead, Butcher’s team could only watch as Soldier Boy inadvertently gave Homelander exactly what he needed to ruin their plan and leave them completely exposed.
This is a rare moment where Butcher appears truly frightened. Although the super-virus doesn’t seem effective right now, this scene strongly suggests an even more thrilling finale to the season.
The Boys Having To Find A New Way Of Killing Homelander Is Better Than Using The Supe Virus
The team in The Boys wants Homelander to weaken and die during his upcoming speech at The Democratic Church of America, ideally from the supe virus – a fate they feel he deserves, though it wouldn’t be the most dramatic ending. While this outcome would bring them peace, even if it meant some sacrifices on their end, it’s not the big, explosive Homelander death everyone anticipates.
Even with all they’ve faced, this situation feels surprisingly simple, which actually makes the challenge of finding a new way to defeat Homelander more compelling. It’s natural that some of the team will feel discouraged and lose hope, but that sense of desperation is precisely what the ending of season five needs to convey.
Instead of relying on clever schemes and sneaking around, these heroes need to directly confront and attempt to kill Homelander, even if it means risking everything. A desperate move, like using Temp V again despite its dangers, could be necessary. This could also bring characters like Ryan, the students from Gen V, and even Queen Maeve back together with The Boys to fight.

Chasing V-One and trying out the supe virus was fun, but it didn’t create the high-stakes situation we’re facing now. Defeating Homelander seems nearly impossible – and that’s intentional. His downfall will be much more impactful and satisfying because of how difficult it is.
Even with everything that’s happened, a few characters still have the power to kill Homelander in The Boys season 5. His death should be a direct, personal confrontation – not something that happens from a distance, like a virus. Finding a new, impactful way to defeat him would be the perfect way to end the season.
Okay, so it’s a long shot, but the way things are going, there’s a tiny chance Homelander could actually win – which honestly terrifies me! But that’s what’s so brilliant about The Boys – you really can’t count anything out. And with the virus becoming less and less of a factor, these last two episodes are absolutely crucial. I’m completely hooked and have no idea what’s going to happen!
The Boys Season 5 May Not Be Done With The Supe Virus Entirely
Even though the supe virus doesn’t affect Homelander, the show isn’t finished with it. And even if Homelander is defeated, the conflict won’t automatically end, as Butcher’s drive for revenge might extend beyond just defeating his main enemy.
Butcher has always been very open about his dislike of superheroes, frequently criticizing characters like Annie and Kimiko and even stating they aren’t truly human. Because of these deeply held beliefs, it seems unlikely he’ll end his crusade against supes even if Homelander is defeated, despite his own involvement with them.
Since he’s faced death before, Butcher might now try to prevent other superpowered individuals from repeating Vought’s harmful actions, potentially by revisiting the virus. Whether he operates covertly or openly shares his intentions with The Boys, the fifth season could conclude with Butcher giving in to his darker impulses and betraying those closest to him.
Butcher understands how devastated Hughie and Frenchie would be if they lost the people they care about, and he knows releasing the virus would probably kill Ryan, going against his promise to Becca. But given how much Butcher has become like Homelander over the course of the series, he’s likely willing to do whatever it takes to finish what he started, even if it means causing similar pain.
The rest of the team will likely try to intervene, but the super-powered virus could still be important in the final episode. If you’re wondering whether the virus storyline was a waste of time, it’s worth watching to see if Butcher’s threat of total destruction extends beyond just defeating Homelander.
