As someone who has been closely observing and participating in the cryptocurrency space for over a decade now, I find it fascinating to see how far we have come since the inception of Bitcoin. The unveiling of the Satoshi Nakamoto statue in Lugano by Tether is not only a testament to the enduring influence of Bitcoin’s creator but also serves as a powerful symbol of the decentralized financial revolution that has empowered millions worldwide.

Partnering with local authorities in Lugano, Switzerland, Tether – the biggest stablecoin issuer globally – has teamed up to reveal a brand-new statue dedicated to the anonymous figure believed to be Bitcoin‘s creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, during the third annual event of the Plan ₿ initiative.

As stated in a recent announcement from Tether, the Satoshi Nakamoto statue symbolizes the enigma and inventiveness of Bitcoin’s creator, paying tribute to their visionary concept and lasting impact.

Valentina Picozzi crafted the statue in such a manner that it interacts with the viewer’s vantage point. As you move around it, the statue seems to vanish when viewed head-on or from behind, but reveals a clear image of a man engrossed in his laptop when observed from the sides. This artwork symbolically represents Nakamoto’s withdrawal from public scrutiny following the creation of a framework for decentralized finance.

Paolo Ardoino, Tether’s CEO, stated that this piece showcases the lasting impact of Satoshi’s innovative ideas. It encourages us to keep exploring new frontiers in innovation and financial independence. It’s a privilege to reveal this homage to a pioneer who transformed the global financial landscape,” said Paolo Ardoino.

Tether asserted that the statue serves as a reminder that the principles of decentralization and financial sovereignty continue to thrive while Nakamoto’s identity remains hidden. It sits in front of Lugano’s Villa Ciani.

Embracing Crypto Payments

Over the past two years, Lugano has seen significant progress in embracing Bitcoin, thanks to their joint venture with Tether known as Plan ₿. This initiative allows local residents to pay for public services and taxes using Bitcoin (BTC), Tether (USDT), and Lugano’s own stablecoin, LVGA, which they have legally recognized as tender.

The city hosts a Plan ₿ forum each year, bringing together blockchain industry leaders, government officials, and Bitcoin enthusiasts to discuss the future of cryptocurrencies and decentralized finance.

Mayor Michele Foletti of Lugano stated: ‘Lugano is swiftly emerging as a significant center for digital advancement. This statue symbolizes Satoshi Nakamoto, but it also reflects the forward-thinking mindset that defines our city. We take great pride in hosting the Plan ₿ Forum and fostering the expansion of blockchain technology and digital assets. It’s exciting to now have this statue here, paying tribute to the inventor of Bitcoin.’

By December 2023, Lugano will wholeheartedly adopt cryptocurrency transactions by integrating a technology that enables residents to settle bills by simply scanning the invoice QR code using their chosen smartphone wallets.
