Taylor Sheridan’s ‘Call of Duty’ Movie: Release Date, Cast, Plot, & Everything We Know

Taylor Sheridan is returning to filmmaking, taking on two major projects. He’s writing and producing the action thriller F.A.S.T., slated for release in 2027, and will also be a writer and producer on the upcoming Call of Duty movie. It’s a challenge, as video game adaptations often aren’t successful, and several others – including new Mortal Kombat, Sonic, Minecraft, and Street Fighter films – are already in the works. Sheridan will need to deliver a truly exceptional movie to stand out. However, his previous work on shows like Lioness and the film Without Remorse demonstrate his ability to create compelling military-focused stories.

‘Call of Duty’ Confirmed At CinemaCon

Paramount gave attendees at CinemaCon a first look at their upcoming live-action Call of Duty movie, officially confirming the project is moving forward. Director Peter Berg will helm the adaptation of the popular video game, working from a script by Taylor Sheridan, with Rob Kostich also producing. Berg and Kostich shared the news and assured fans the film will deliver.

Kostich explained that he and Berg were only willing to make the film with the right creative leader – someone who truly valued the source material. They found that partner in David Ellison, the CEO of Paramount Skydance. Kostich also emphasized his strong connection to the special operations community and his commitment to portraying it realistically, while still creating a large-scale, impressive film.

What Will ‘Call of Duty’ Be About?

The biggest mystery remains unsolved. When Paramount and Activision first announced the project, they only used vague marketing language and didn’t share any real details about the story. It’s possible the story isn’t finished yet, or the studio is deliberately keeping details under wraps for now.

In September 2025, Activision surveyed Call of Duty fans to gauge their preferences for the upcoming movie. They asked what game series – Modern Warfare, Black Ops, or Zombies – fans would most like to see adapted, or if they’d prefer a completely original story. However, the movie’s writer, Taylor Sheridan, has said he prefers to work without outside input, so it’s uncertain if any of this fan feedback will actually be used.

I’ve been a fan of Call of Duty for over 20 years, and I’ve loved seeing all the different stories they’ve told. I recently read that Matt Booty, who heads up Xbox Game Studios, thinks the new creative lead has a really tough but exciting job ahead of them, and honestly, I agree! It’s a huge franchise with a lot of history.

With twenty years of Call of Duty games, it can be hard to know where to begin – which character and which game series should you choose? The team behind the franchise has a clear idea of where they want to take things, and they believe Taylor Sheridan is the right person to help them achieve that vision.

Sheridan might want to listen to what gamers think this time around. Fans of the game are likely to notice even small things, and to avoid negative feedback, the creator of Yellowstone should probably stick to what’s proven to work. He doesn’t have much experience with video games himself, so it’s a good idea to be cautious.

Who Will Star in ‘Call of Duty’?

We don’t know who will star in the project yet, but announcements are expected shortly. Given the creator’s history, it’s likely they’ll cast a major movie star. However, because the studio plans to invest heavily in visual effects, the budget for actors might be limited, potentially leading to a smaller cast of less famous faces.

Captain John Price is a key character, and the team needs a strong actor to play him. Alan Ritchson would be a great choice; he’s proven his skill with military roles in shows like War Machine and Ghosts of War. Dwayne Johnson could also pull it off, though some audiences have mixed feelings about him lately.

As a huge fan, I think actors could really nail characters like Ghost and Makarov – someone with a background in war movies would be perfect. I’m not sure we need a ton of brand new characters when there are already so many great ones. Honestly, I’m really hoping the filmmakers give more attention to the awesome female characters we’ve seen, like Farah from Modern Warfare and Polina from Vanguard. They deserve more screen time!

When Will ‘Call of Duty’ Be Released?

At CinemaCon, Paramount announced that a Call of Duty movie will hit theaters on June 30, 2028. The big question now is whether it will be a success. The game already has a huge following – Statista reports over 100 million people play it every month on various platforms. If even a fraction of those players buy tickets, the film could become one of the biggest blockbusters ever.

I’m really excited about this new film, but it’s going to have a tough time in theaters! It’s coming out around the same time as some big sequels like Lilo & Stitch 2, Incredibles 3, and Final Destination 4. I’m sure even more studios will announce summer 2028 releases as we get closer. Still, I think Sheridan and Paramount have a good chance if they don’t have to compete with huge action or war movies during that same period. I’m hoping it does well!
