Sydney Sweeney’s R-Rated Box Office Bomb Is Finding Redemption on Streaming

Sydney Sweeney quickly became a major star with her roles in shows like Euphoria and The White Lotus, and the film Anyone But You. However, 2025 proved to be a difficult year for her, including public discussion around an American Eagle ad and several disappointing box office results. Despite one of her 2025 films initially failing in theaters, it’s now gaining popularity on streaming services.

Many people haven’t heard of Americana, but it’s currently available to stream on Starz and is gaining a following. It’s actually the sixth most popular show on the platform right now. Written and directed by Tony Tost, the film first premiered at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival, but wasn’t released in theaters until 2025. It likely would have performed better with an earlier release, as it only made $500,000 at the box office despite costing $9 million to produce.

Despite disappointing ticket sales, the movie wasn’t actually that bad. Rebecca Hall plays Penny Jo Poplin, a waitress who gets a shot at her dreams when she discovers a valuable Native American treasure. However, she’s not the only one looking for it – several other dangerous treasure hunters are also after the prize. The film also features Paul Walter Hauser, Halsey, Zahn McClarnon, Simon Rex, and Eric Dane. Here’s what the movie is about, according to the official description:

This thrilling modern western follows a captivating group of characters as they fight for a valuable Native American artifact. When the artifact surfaces on the black market, a quiet waitress hoping for a better life joins forces with a heartbroken veteran to try and get it back. Their pursuit puts them on a collision course with a dangerous criminal and a wealthy collector of Western relics. As more people enter the fray – including a tribal leader and a woman running from her past – the situation quickly turns violent.

Following disappointing performances from films like Eden, Echo Valley, and Christy, The Housemaid became a major success, earning over $98 million as of this writing – it’s still playing in some cinemas. The film stars Naomi Watts alongside Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar, and critics generally liked it, giving it a 73% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences loved it even more, with a score of 92%.
