While on a school trip in Norway, a six-year-old boy made an incredible discovery: a sword dating back 1,300 years to the Viking Age. The find has sparked a lot of research and excitement among archaeologists.
In May 2026, while on a school trip to Hadeland, Norway, Henrik spotted a rusted metal object partially buried in the ground.
I remember this little kid found something while playing in the dirt, and he was so excited he ran to his teachers with it! They took one look and figured it wasn’t just a piece of old metal – they suspected it was something important.
School employees immediately reached out to local archaeologists, and they verified that the item was a historical relic dating back to the Viking age.
Archeologists bow studying ancient sword uncovered by 6-year-old boy
The Viking Age lasted from 700 to 1100 AD. Vikings were famous as pirates and fighters, and they used weapons like swords to raid and steal. Henrik had recently discovered one of these swords sticking out of the ground.
Cultural heritage experts in Innlandet believe a recently discovered sword is from the early Viking Age, between 500 and 800 AD. They’ve identified it as a single-edged iron blade known as a scramasax (often shortened to sax).

As a huge fan of the story, I was fascinated to learn where Henrik discovered the sword! Apparently, the area is packed with ancient stuff – things from the Stone Age and Bronze Age have been found there for years. Even cooler, the old Icelandic stories say Danish kings used to hang out there and throw parties for their visitors. It really adds to the mystery, knowing it’s a place steeped in so much history!
The sword is currently held at the Museum of Cultural History in Oslo, and researchers plan to continue their investigations of it there.
A young girl in Wales recently made an amazing discovery: a rare Mexican axolotl! She rescued the creature and has been keeping it as a pet, and her story has quickly spread online.
