RuneScape Rolled Back Its Servers After a Game Jam Bug Handed Players Trillions of Runes

An update meant to improve the game experience had to be completely reversed due to a critical error with runes that quickly became unmanageable for the developers.

The recent Game Jam update brought several helpful improvements to RuneScape. These changes were developed during internal Jagex ‘hackathons,’ where developers can freely explore and build new ideas.

A major update removed the previous limit of 16,000 runes that could be stored in a rune pouch, giving players unlimited storage. This was a highly requested improvement and a positive change for the game.

It didn’t quite go to plan.

A Bug With Very Big Numbers

Right after the recent game update, players began reporting a strange issue: their rune pouches were overflowing with runes. It wasn’t just a small increase – many found they had trillions of runes! Some players even claimed to have 1.5 trillion runes in their inventory, which sounds unbelievable until you see it for yourself.

It wasn’t just how widespread the issue was – these runes could be traded. Soon after the bug became public, the RuneScape economy began to suffer. For example, the price of water runes quickly fell to just 1 gold, illustrating the extent of the problem.

Jagex Moved Quickly

A little over an hour after news of the problem spread, the game servers were shut down. By the time Jagex explained what happened on Reddit, they had already decided to revert the game to how it was at 10:30 AM UTC – the time the latest update was released. This meant all player progress would be reset to that point.

According to the developers, the surge of runes entering the game’s economy would have severely harmed it and undermined its stability. The problem spread too quickly and impacted too many players for them to fix each case individually within a reasonable timeframe.

Some players reportedly had 1.5 trillion runes sitting in their inventory

Now things become tricky. Simply reverting to a previous state isn’t ideal. Many players had made significant progress in the last hour – earning valuable items from bosses, working towards upgrading their bows, and obtaining capes. A rollback essentially undoes all of that effort.

Jagex has admitted the issue and expressed sympathy for players who lost their progress. However, it’s unclear if this apology will fully address their frustration.

A Familiar Risk With Live Games

It’s common for updates, even those meant to improve things, to introduce bugs – this isn’t just a RuneScape issue. The situation where a helpful change accidentally creates a way to exploit the game is almost typical in game development. The Game Jam format, with its fast-paced development and flexibility, makes this even more likely, as it allows for both innovation and unexpected problems.

Jagex responded quickly, and it seems like acting fast was the correct choice considering how rapidly the game’s economy was changing. While the rollback is frustrating, and even devastating for some players, it was likely a better solution than letting the problems worsen and become much harder to fix for the game as a whole.
