According to a statement from his publicist, Cindi Berger, Redford passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in Sundance, Utah, on September 16, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. Robert Redford, born in Santa Monica, California in 1936, quickly became a popular leading actor in Hollywood. He first gained widespread recognition for his charming performance alongside Paul Newman in the 1969 film *Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid*. Redford cemented his status as a romantic leading man with roles opposite Jane Fonda in *Barefoot in the Park*, Barbra Streisand in *The Way We Were*, and Meryl Streep in *Out of Africa*. Throughout his career, he excelled in diverse genres, appearing in films like *Three Days of Condor*, *The Old Man and the Gun*, *Quiz Show*, and even *Avengers: Endgame*, among many others.
Robert Redford became known for his work both in front of and behind the camera, starting in his forties. While he was first nominated for an Academy Award for his acting role in the 1973 film *The Sting*, he won his first Oscar in 1980 for directing his debut feature film, *Ordinary People*. He’s also been an executive producer on various projects, including the recent AMC series *Dark Winds*. Beyond filmmaking, Redford founded the Sundance Institute in 1981, a nonprofit that has helped launch the careers of many directors through its annual Sundance Film Festival.
