Prime Video’s Returning Detective Show Brings Back One Of Amazon’s Best Shared Universes

Connected TV shows that share the same world – often called cinematic universes – are now very common, and they’re not just for superheroes or science fiction. Crime shows and police dramas are also using this model to expand their stories, building on the success of long-running series like NCIS and its many spinoffs, or the extensive universe created by Dick Wolf.

As a crime drama fan, I have to say Prime Video has really nailed this idea of a shared universe – it’s something they do better than most. Instead of dusting off an old show, they created their own world starting with Bosch, a fantastic, hard-boiled detective series starring Titus Welliver. Bosch quickly became one of Prime’s biggest hits, and then they expanded with Bosch: Legacy. While both of those shows have finished their runs, the good news is this universe isn’t ending. We’re getting a spinoff called Ballard in 2025, and it’s officially been renewed for a second season, which is great news for fans like me!

The series Ballard centers around Detective Renée Ballard (Maggie Q), a character first seen in Bosch: Legacy. After a strong debut, a second season has been greenlit and is currently being filmed. While Ballard works well on its own as a detective show, it’s also important for Prime Video as a whole. The show has expanded the Bosch world from a popular crime series into a fully connected television universe, and that expansion is continuing with Season 2.

Ballard Has Cemented Bosch As A Flagship Cinematic Universe

Before Michael Connelly’s Ballard series, the Bosch books and show were popular but followed a fairly simple storyline. Bosch: Legacy continued Harry Bosch’s adventures after his time with the LAPD, showing him as a private investigator. While it expanded the world a little, the focus remained on Harry Bosch. Legacy continued Bosch’s story, but the franchise hadn’t fully evolved into a sprawling cinematic universe just yet.

The series took a new turn with Ballard. By centering the story on Maggie Q’s Renée Ballard instead of Harry Bosch, the Bosch universe gained a fresh perspective. The spin-off didn’t just continue Bosch’s story—it established its own unique identity. The upcoming second season of Ballard confirms this new direction and proves the franchise’s move away from its original lead wasn’t a temporary one.

The impact of the Ballard series on the Bosch franchise is most noticeable in how the two shows feel. Bosch centers on Harry Bosch as a classic, solitary detective, while Ballard highlights Renée Ballard as a team leader. She tackles cases in a new way, and the show puts more focus on the challenges within the police department itself – specifically, how individual beliefs sometimes conflict with the rules and limitations of the system.

Rather than just copying the style of Michael Connelly’s Bosch with a new detective, Ballard naturally grows the existing world by offering a fresh perspective on the same universe. This creates a network of interconnected stories and characters, each with its own unique feel – essentially building a full-fledged cinematic universe.

Ballard Season 2 Isn’t The Only Way The Bosch Universe Is Expanding

Fans are thrilled to have Ballard back, and Prime Video isn’t stopping there with the Bosch world. Along with season two of Ballard, they’re also creating a prequel called Bosch: Start of Watch, which will show a younger Harry Bosch at the beginning of his career.

Unlike the original Bosch series, Bosch: Start of Watch will star Cameron Monaghan as a young Harry Bosch. This new show explores Bosch’s beginnings as a rookie LAPD officer, showing his early days on the force long before he became the experienced detective fans are familiar with.

Since Bosch: Start of Watch takes place early in Harry Bosch’s career, it will feel different in tone from the later Bosch and Ballard series. This new show can explore fresh storylines, focusing on a young Bosch as he learns the ropes and navigates the complexities of the police system—a formative period we haven’t seen before in the franchise.

The shift in tone is significant because it shows the series is growing in its themes, not just in terms of timeline. With the addition of Start of Watch to Bosch, Legacy, and Ballard, this franchise is becoming impressively expansive for a streaming detective world. It’s rare for a crime series to build such a connected storytelling universe while still feeling realistic. Between season two of Ballard and Bosch: Start of Watch, Prime Video is demonstrating that the Bosch universe has a lot more to offer, even after the conclusions of the original Bosch series.
