As a seasoned analyst with over two decades in the tech and finance industries, I’ve seen my fair share of mysteries unraveling and theories debunked. The latest documentary on HBO, “Electric Money: The Bitcoin Mystery,” proposes an intriguing theory about Peter Todd being Satoshi Nakamoto. However, as a skeptic who values tangible evidence over circumstantial clues, I find the documentary’s case to be tenuous at best.

On October 8, the HBO documentary titled “Electric Money: The Bitcoin Enigma” by Cullen Hoback was broadcasted. This film proposes the intriguing theory that the enigmatic inventor of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto, could possibly be Peter Todd, a 39-year-old software expert.

Instead, the documentary primarily relies on circumstantial evidence, concentrating on Todd’s initial engagements with Bitcoin and his ties to notable individuals like cryptographer Adam Back.

Important proofs encompass a 2010 online discussion thread where Todd appears to expand upon Nakamoto’s ideas, as well as a conversation log showing Todd discussing the concept of ‘spending’ or ‘losing’ Bitcoins.

In the filmmaker’s view, the scene could be hinting at an unspent Bitcoin hoard belonging to Satoshi, valued at more than a million coins or approximately $65 billion.

Todd: I’m Not Satoshi

According to BitMEX Research, this response from Todd can be described as witty yet technical, offering a precise but somewhat sarcastic retort to Satoshi.

“Today, such a remark as this from Peter might be made. There’s absolutely no evidence supporting the idea that he, not Satoshi, is responsible.

According to Forbes, HBO will say that @peterktodd is Satoshi…

According to the Forbes article, a 2010 post on BitcoinTalk, which Cullen Hoback thinks was inadvertently published using Todd’s account, is said to have been a response to Satoshi Nakamoto.

This is clearly ridiculous! It is just an example of…

Todd isn’t widely known in crypto circles but does maintain a presence on X, where he has 167,000 followers. He has a controversial online persona and connections to Ukraine, posting this on Oct. 9 after mainstream media picked up the story.

I’ve got a few ties to Ukraine and have visited the country several times, even amidst the extensive military conflict… I’ve also spoken at various events for the Ukrainian Bitcoin community.

As reported by a CNN interview with the director, Cullen Hoback, Peter Todd openly refuted claims that he is Satoshi Nakamoto, instead labeling the documentary as reckless and stating that it endangers his personal safety.

Todd asserted that HBO hadn’t reached out to him prior to the movie’s premiere and hadn’t given him an opportunity to watch it, yet Hoback stands firm in his verdict even after the refusal.

Todd remarked on CNN, “Cullen seems desperate and mistakenly blowing things out of proportion.” He further explained, “He’s turning minor coincidences into something significant, which is typical of someone who engages in conspiratorial thinking.

Plot twist: it was signed by Adam Back pretending to be me pretending to be him.

So Who Is He?

Todd graduated from Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto at the age of 39. At that time, he would have been 23 years old while the Bitcoin white paper was being drafted.

At the age of 15, he asserted that he began engaging with prominent figures in the cryptocurrency field and cypherpunk community.

Castle Island Ventures partner Nic Carter, acquainted with Todd since 2017, asserts that “Todd is among the most influential figures in the Bitcoin community, particularly from a technical standpoint.” However, Carter does not consider Todd to be the creator of Bitcoin, also known as Satoshi Nakamoto.

Bitcoiner Jameson Lopp was also skeptical about the claim.

Regardless of where Satoshi might reside, it’s amusing to imagine them finding humor in the current bout of folly.

At the time of writing, Bitcoin showed no response from the markets as it continued its consistent movement within its price range, with the current value being approximately $62,260.
