Vampire Crawlers, revealed at November’s Xbox Showcase, takes the core idea of ‘Survivors’-like games and adds a lot more strategy. It does this through deckbuilding – collecting and customizing cards – while keeping the same fast-paced, chaotic action and similar graphics. The game also features a central village where you manage your characters and a new 2.5D visual style.
Poncle Games has been developing Vampire Crawlers for the last year. This new dungeon-crawling deckbuilder is different from the straightforward gameplay of Vampire Survivors, but it still captures the same exciting and chaotic energy. While Vampire Crawlers starts a bit slower and isn’t quite as instantly addictive, it offers more strategic depth and a wonderfully unpredictable experience.
Even after I got to Lucca, Italy to try out Poncle’s new game, Vampire Crawlers, the stories about Luca Galante kept circulating. Several Poncle developers told me with a smile how much they enjoyed adding to the mystery around him. When fans asked about Galante, they’d playfully suggest he might be nearby, even hinting that they were him. Matteo Sapio, Poncle’s chief strategy officer, chuckled, explaining that Galante is indeed incredibly talented, but also a genuinely kind and down-to-earth person who simply cherishes his privacy.
In an interview with TopMob, Galante shared the story behind Poncle’s decision to create Vampire Crawlers. He also discussed Vampire Survivors, suggesting it would have worked well as either a metroidvania game or a title within the Castlevania series.

Luca Galante of Poncle told TopMob that Vampire Crawlers wasn’t their initial plan after Vampire Survivors. They began by exploring five different game ideas, collaborating with several indie teams to experiment. Ultimately, Vampire Crawlers stood out as the most promising project, leading them to focus on that one.
