A new, unidentified dog appeared in Overwatch with Season 2, and players are already speculating about its identity and purpose.
Overwatch Season 2 launched with a major update, including a new hero named Sierra and redesigned maps. However, a hidden feature has also been discovered and is generating a lot of excitement among players.
The latest update added a new in-game cosmetic called a ‘Spray’ featuring a dog named River, but it’s currently unknown who River is or what his significance is. Most Sprays connect to a hero or a real-world event, so it’s unusual that River’s connection to the Overwatch world hasn’t been explained.
Overwatch players baffled by mystery dog added in Season 2
Naturally, this has sparked a lot of fan theories, some believable and others quite funny.
Fans have been guessing about River’s origins, with some suggesting he might be the pet of Torbjorn or Tracer because he wears goggles. Others believe he could belong to Hazard or the water-based hero, Wuyang, due to his name.
Uh…. Who’s this handsome fella??????

Some players playfully suggested this was a hint at a new damage-dealing hero nicknamed “Tractor Dog,” referencing a well-known meme from when Jetpack Cat was released in Season 1.
Fans are also speculating about River’s connection to the hero Jetpack Cat. Since we don’t know much about Fika’s past before joining Overwatch, some believe River might be a significant antagonist, perhaps even Jetpack Cat’s greatest foe.
It’s also possible River is a hero that hasn’t been released yet and will be added to the game later. However, we’ve previewed all the heroes planned for 2026, and they all appear to be either human or robots.
The story of River is still a mystery, and we’re waiting for Blizzard to share more information. With the release of Overwatch Season 3 in June and a new hero, we might finally get some answers.
