Years before, Ulysses worked as a sheriff and a woman came to him, claiming her father was sexually abusing her. Because he’d been friends with the father for a long time, Ulysses didn’t believe her story. Soon after, he responded to a call about a fight between them, and found the woman threatening her father with a gun.

Facing a difficult situation, the father shockingly blamed a young woman for his own wrongdoings, inadvertently revealing what really happened. He confessed that the woman had killed her father and then turned the gun on Ulysses, leaving him no choice but to defend himself by shooting her. Later, when it’s discovered that Moira is involved in the town’s scheme and has Ulysses trapped, she insists he tell her the full, honest account of what occurred.

Things are going well until the Yakuza leader is unexpectedly killed, which throws everything into chaos. After a last battle, only Ulysses, Alex, and Deputy Blaine are left. Ulysses and Alex escape and continue Ulysses’ work as temporary sheriffs. This gives Alex a renewed sense of purpose, allowing him to overcome his past regrets and rebuild his relationship with his wife.

Blaine stays in Normal and becomes sheriff, appearing to hide what really happened. The final scene hints that the Yakuza are still operating in town, but now with increased surveillance. Blaine and the other survivors seem content with this arrangement, suggesting a peaceful resolution for everyone involved.

Normal is mostly a fun, action-packed movie, but it also surprisingly offers some interesting characters and thoughtful observations about society. Lori and Keith find renewed hope, Alex gets the opportunity to fulfill her father’s expectations, and Blaine evolves into a real sheriff by learning to adapt. This shows Ulysses is a naturally gifted leader and an excellent mentor, not just someone who steps up in emergencies.

The series Normal, like Hot Fuzz, cleverly subverts the typical small-town atmosphere often seen in similar stories, especially around the town of Ulysses. It uses the surprising reveal that the residents are armed and dangerous for both exciting action and to highlight the real issues facing small towns in America.

Mayor Kibner admits the town’s survival is thanks to shady dealings. He’s right – the town has essentially been rebuilt with ongoing support from the Yakuza, though not everyone benefits. The story quietly suggests that we often justify harmful actions for the sake of what we see as the greater good, and that individuals can be complicit in these things, even as they change and grow.
