He let Us Magazine know that Season 3 would be a real departure from the first two seasons, which were both set around the holidays. It sounds like they’re mixing things up, and I’m really excited to see where they take it!

So, next year we’re skipping a big vacation, but we are going to take some time off around the colder months – basically, we’re planning something near winter. It won’t be a full-blown holiday, just a cozy break when it gets a little chilly!

In an interview with Us magazine, Wyle talked about the show’s unique approach of basing each season around a different holiday, admitting it could sometimes feel like a gimmick. However, he didn’t dismiss the idea of setting Season 3 around New Year’s Eve, saying:

We’ve already filmed a Fourth of July scene on The Pitt. Christmas wouldn’t work because of all the costumes and decorations, and we’d quickly get tired of it. Halloween feels too cliché, and New Year’s Eve always means a packed emergency room. So, New Year’s Eve might be the best option.

Three days after that, Gimmell shared with TV Line that Season 3 would premiere in November. He explained they were only moving the timeline forward by four months, which offered several benefits. This timing would allow for colder weather-based storylines and also keep certain characters around longer than they otherwise would have been.

If the new season begins in November, the storyline might take place during Thanksgiving instead of New Year’s Eve. However, a bigger worry is whether repeating the same plot elements will bore audiences and cause them to stop watching.

The Pros and Cons of Setting ‘The Pitt’ Season 3 on a Holiday

The medical drama The Pitt has 15 hour-long episodes per season, each depicting a challenging emergency room shift. While Seasons 1 and 2 were set around Labor Day and July 4th respectively, consistently framing each season around a holiday could damage the show’s strong reputation. There are definitely both benefits and drawbacks to sticking with this approach.

As Wyle pointed out, New Year’s Eve is always incredibly hectic for emergency rooms and could create a compelling season of the show. We’d likely see a lot of injuries from alcohol, accidents with champagne, car crashes, and fireworks – keeping the hospital very busy. However, this would be very similar to the injuries we saw during the Fourth of July episode in Season 2, meaning the only major difference would be the weather. Some viewers might also find another holiday setting repetitive, as the show seems to be following a predictable pattern.

Releasing Season 3 around Thanksgiving could be a great solution. It’s a cold-weather holiday, unlike Labor Day or the Fourth of July, and it would fit well with the characters’ personal and family issues. While no one wants to work on Thanksgiving, the extra holiday pay might convince the medical staff to come in, allowing the show to have both festive moments and serious drama. Plus, the holiday itself offers opportunities for compelling storylines related to food, weather, and common illnesses.

Having won five Primetime Emmys and climbed to the #38 spot on IMDb’s Top 250 list, The Pitt has built up a lot of positive momentum. However, its holiday-themed episodes could become predictable. If Season 3 features a holiday set during cold weather, the show seems to be on the right track.
